Manager Curatorial & Vistior Services

The New York State Office of General Services manages one of the largest collections of modern art in Upstate New York. The Empire State Plaza Art Collection includes works by such luminaries as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Helen Frankenthaler. The Curatorial & Visitor Services Office also oversees the Harlem Art Collection, Executive Mansion Collections, and NYS Capitol collections.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and four years of experience interpreting objects, caring for or conserving art and objects in a museum or organization which oversees a major art collection, or creating programming for object-based learning. Two years of this experience must have involved administration (budget planning, directing, and/or supervising) of a collections-based institution or with a historic site under a government agency or non-profit organization.

Substitutions: A bachelor’s degree in gallery management, museum studies, art history, public history, or education may substitute for one year of experience. A master’s degree in the above fields may substitute for an additional year of experience.

Preferred Experience:
• Experience working with a contemporary or modern art collection containing abstract expressionist work is preferred.

Duties Description

• Manage the daily activities of the OGS Curatorial and Visitor Services Program including oversight of conservation of the Empire State Plaza Art Collection, Harlem Art Collection, Executive Mansion Collections, NYS Capitol collections, and art at other OGS sites as well as the updating of records for those sites.
• Assist in the presentation and administration of rare, valuable, fine, and decorative art collections either owned by the state of New York or borrowed from other leading cultural institutions.
• Oversee incoming and outgoing loans for works that are part of Empire State Plaza, NYS Capitol, and NYS Executive Mansion collections.
• Assist with the conservation and restoration of fine art collections including oversight of two conservation contracts.
• Develop, implement, and supervise interpretive/educational programs and exhibitions featuring the above referenced collections and others as required.
• Manage interpretive/outreach programs for the public and supervise a team to execute curatorial and conservation projects.
• Assist with the management of the Capitol Tour program and Empire State Plaza Visitor Center & Gift Shop.
• Assist with the management of the Curatorial & Visitor Services Office’s daily operation.
• Manage internship programs for the office.
• Efficiently utilize program databases, applications, and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Interact with customers and colleagues in a courteous and professional manner.
• Perform the full range of supervisory responsibilities.
• Perform other duties and special projects as required.
