Job Description
Position: Special Education Instructional Assistant
Location: Watertown High School
Affiliation: WEA Unit D
Pay Range: Per the WEA Unit D contract salary scale, based on experience

Summary:
The Instructional Assistant will support the classroom teacher through working with a diverse group of student learners. The instructional assistant directs learning experiences; maintains a positive learning environment; prepares and uses classroom materials; keeps appropriate records; assists the implementation of the IEP; and performs other related duties as assigned under the direction of the classroom teacher.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Assists teachers to prepare and present instructional materials for the purpose of implementing the instructional program.
  • Assists teacher for the purpose of maintaining a cooperative and creative instructional environment.
  • Supervises students and organizes the learning materials.
  • Evaluates student progress for the purpose of assisting teacher in educational planning.
  • Teaches students individually and in small groups to reinforce instructional materials, to learn new skills and abilities, and to implement the IEP.
  • Monitors/directs student activities and behavior, and provides feedback to teacher.
  • Ability to take initiative to complete tasks and assist students with de-escalation techniques and executive functioning skills.
  • Participates in meetings, trainings, and other activities to promote the implementation and evaluation of IEP goals (as needed).
  • Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating visual equipment, using educational training equipment, and distributing/collecting paper and supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to facilitate the smooth operation of the classroom and/or program.

Skills to:
  • Read notes, memos, student reports
  • Maintain effective cooperative relationships with students, teachers, staff and school community
  • Receive and implement job duties based on brief and concise oral direction
  • Work effectively in direct work with individual students or small groups

Knowledge of:
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and vocabulary
  • Basic math skills
  • Computer skills using MS Word, MS Excel, email, etc.
  • General needs and behaviors of students of various backgrounds
  • Oral and written communication
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy

Ability to:
  • Understand and address students with learning disabilities
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions
