2023 Summer Intern Program – Data Strategy

Develop a career in the Chief Data Office by learning how corporations govern their valuable data. Data is the most important asset of the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp (SMBC) after its people. Become a member of our CDO team responsible for setting the highest data governance standards for SMBC and associated entities in multiple geographical locations.

SMBC is seeking sharp, talented, and energetic Data Interns passionate about a career in CDO to join our New York team. If you will be graduating in December 2023 or May 2024 and are looking for your next challenge, we want to speak with you!

This internship provides a combination of training and mentorship with skilled and experienced data management professionals that is designed to teach enterprise class principles and best practices.

What is the Opportunity?
SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas and support a range of deals with our clients.
We offer many different opportunities including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and observing client meetings – all to improve their understanding of the global banking industry.

We are currently hiring into the following areas:

Data Governance & Data Quality
Data Governance is managed at the SMBCAD level and supported by all SMBCAD entities. The team ensures the firm adheres to its Policy and Standards. The governance team also ensures good data quality by implementing frameworks for key data elements, data lineage, data quality measurement, issue management and data sharing throughout SMCAD entities
 
Data Architecture and Solutions
Our Data Architecture and Solutions team is composed of enterprise architects and data analytics. Sharing the responsibilities of data sourcing, implementation of new tooling and their capabilities. Breathing life into new firmwide technologies by way of data analytics & insights.
 
Data Management
At the core of the firm is our party, reference and transaction data and it is imperative that SMBC enforce the groundwork of how our data is managed and interpreted day to day. Party data composes most of institutional, entity data points while reference data are market data that folds into important financial and risk models. This team ensures that each data point is effectively managed and that proper records are retained and disposed of properly.
How Our Program Works
 
Our Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year.
This 10-week program commences in June and includes:
  • Orientation
  • Training with on-the-desk experience
  • Senior Speaker Series
  • Japanese cultural activities
  • Social networking activities
  • Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
  • Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC

 
Note: These roles will take place in White Plains and our 277 Park Avenue office.

How Our Program Works

  • Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC

The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes: 
 
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Information Management, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Statistics, Mathematics, Finance, Economics from an accredited university with a graduation date of December 2023 or May 2024; excellent academic record
  • Ability to demonstrate a self-motivated and disciplined approach to learning and working.
  • Candidates should be able to explain how they take their professional growth seriously and demonstrate their passion for data.
  • Related work or internship experience desirable.
  • Must be highly energetic, organized, detail orientated, with excellent problem solving and communication abilities both verbal and written.
  • Must possess the ability to perform under pressure in a challenging environment in an ever-evolving industry.
  • A hunger to learn and take on challenging opportunities contributing to the success of a global firm.
  • Must possess a highly developed sense of personal accountability and follow-through with an ability to effectively prioritize multiple personal tasks, projects and goals.
  • The ability to understand complex and highly technical concepts, and easily explain/translate them to peers is highly preferred.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely
  • Ability to comfortably interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
  • Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
  • Comfort in and commitment to a strong teamwork environment
  • Advanced Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills and the ability to quickly learn new software applications
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving skills
  • Experience in Data related field is a plus

The hourly rate of pay for a position in this program is $54.95 per hour. Individuals in this program will typically work a 35 hour work week.
