Summer Investigative Intern

Civil Rights Corps (CRC), an innovative non-profit civil rights organization, invites applications to join our Washington, DC-based investigative team for the summer of 2022. 
Founded in 2016, CRC challenges wealth-based and race-based systems of oppression. CRC has won groundbreaking litigation challenging the rise of debtors’ prisons, abusive private probation schemes, and wealth-based pre-trial detention. Job Description
Civil Rights Corps is seeking one or more paid full-time investigative interns to join our team for summer 2023. The intern(s) will support our impact litigation and advocacy challenging mass human caging with a goal of creating a legal system that promotes equality and freedom. Internship duties will include:
·        Conducting research, investigation, and related tasks in support of complex civil rights litigation in federal and state courts to challenge a range of injustices within the criminal legal system.
·        Supporting CRC’s litigation teams by requesting, reviewing, organizing, and analyzing documents and working with attorneys and investigators to integrate information into case preparation.
·        Assisting with preparation of discovery responses and planning depositions of witnesses and clients.
·        Conducting interviews with CRC clients, class members, and witnesses.
·        Drafting memos related to interviews and research projects.
·        Developing and maintaining relationships with clients, community partners, organizers, coalition members, and legal allies.
·        Working collaboratively with attorneys, investigators, and policy and communications staff on a variety of cases and projects.

Qualifications
The ideal investigative intern is passionate about social justice, is hard working, a fast learner, proactive, able to juggle multiple tasks, and able to work well in a collaborative environment.
Specific qualifications we are looking for include:
·        Demonstrated commitment to the mission, purpose, and values of CRC.
·        Demonstrated ability to work well in teams.
·        Excellent organizational skills and ability to juggle multiple projects and keep track of deadlines.
·        Experience working with marginalized communities, with those directly impacted by the criminal legal system, and on behalf of low-income clients.
·        Strong research and writing skills.
·        Innovative thinking, an unwillingness to accept things as they are, and a strong work ethic are essential.
·        Spanish language proficiency preferred.
·        Ability to commit to 40 hours per week from around 6/6/2023 through 8/5/2023.

Compensation and Logistics
CRC commits to a salary of $18 an hour for interns. Currently, our staff is working in the office a few days a week with many continuing to be primarily remote.
