Division Director of Business and Finance

The Office of Advancement is seeking a key team member that will be responsible for the finance and business operations of the division. Come be a part of a passionate culture within the Office of Advancement.
The Director of Business is a part of the division's finance leadership team, which includes participation feedback, and planning on division processes and policies, best practice sharing, budget models, and input on training and shared services. Managing the Advancement Programming functions requires coordination and communication with the campus division and department fiscal leads to coordinate processes and needs appropriately.
Primary responsibilities for this position include budget management and accounting in coordination with the Advancement Division and other MU/UM offices. This position will be responsible for the effective use of resources and the business performance of its assigned units. The focus of this position is to provide timely, accurate, effective, and efficient financial information to management/administrative staff and unit leadership to support knowledge-based decision-making and influence strategic decisions and planning. This position provides direct services and support to staff within all departments reporting to the Vice Chancellor; specifically, it ensures the effective use of resources. Including MU gift compliance, system-wide planned gift administration, and system-wide endowment administration.
Key Responsibilities include:
  • Participate as a member of the Advancement Operations team, attending weekly meetings, discussing sensitive topics, brainstorming on ways to address current financial issues and their impact on the Advancement areas across campus, implementation of policy and processes across the units, as well as possible improvements in the units. Represent Advancement on campus committees as requested.
  • Advise leadership on the management of the unit's financial resources, which includes compiling and analyzing financial and operational data to generate regular and ad-hoc reports, distilling the results in meaningful and actionable items to keep leadership informed for knowledge-based decision-making, efficiency and effectiveness, and policies & procedure interpretation and compliance
  • This position manages and provides direct services and support to the staff, within all departments reporting to the Vice Chancellor; specifically, it ensures the effective use of resources (fiscal, capital, and human) in helping the programs contribute to each unit's overall success and operational excellence. Including unit budget process, approval of financial payments, one card management, procurement, shared services, gift compliance, System-wide Endowment reporting, and planned giving administration.
  • Lead the hiring, training, and ongoing mentoring of finance management and finance support positions. Provide guidance and support, assign work, and answer questions and concerns as needed. Lead group to effectively manage the business operations of assigned units and implement process improvements to meet policy requirements and change standards
  • Manage the budget and long-range planning process of this division's financial resources and personnel. Review and monitor fiscal-related transactions and reconciliations, ensuring policy compliance and that proper checks and balances are in place.
  • Collect & compile data for units and provide responses to Division Finance & HR Team for campus and system information requests.
  • Communicate and manage productivity standards, goals, and expectations for departmental staff in conjunction with the Assistant Vice Chancellor. Provide administrative direction and coordination in the formulation, interpretation, and administration of current and long-range policies, procedures, and programs. Design and implement departmental strategic plans in accordance with Advancement standards.
  • Serve as a liaison with all levels of administration, and outside organizations to coordinate departmental business, accomplish directives, review contracts, and facilitate the resolution of problems. Build collegial relationships to support the department's mission internally and externally.
  • Manage employee development and retention by effectively leading, motivating, and mentoring departmental staff. Appraise productivity and efficiency to recommend promotions or other changes in status and handle complaints, grievances, and the disciplinary process as necessary.
  • Oversee the administration of departmental contracts and procurement process in accordance with established policies and requirements regarding reports, records, controls, and conditions governing expenditures of funds and guidance on the appropriation of funds as necessary.

Salary

Compensation for this position starts at $80,000

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 6 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

At least five years of progressive responsibility in managing the business operations and budget for an organization.
