Health Standards and Interoperability Graduate Intern

MITRE’s Open Health Solutions (OHS) department works to address issues in health and healthcare through an open-source mindset—we believe open collaboration is the best path to implement solutions at national scale. We work in multi-disciplinary teams of clinicians, public health practitioners, software engineers, data scientists, AI developers, health data standards experts, health policy analysts, and health economists. Our work includes a wide variety of projects that further our goals of making paradigm-changing improvements to our health and healthcare systems while developing a patient-centered future for individual, family, and community health.


Working with MITRE team members and project leaders to support the delivery of strategic advice and counsel to HHS, VA, and other healthcare entities for the advancement of healthcare outcomes, interoperability, and health standards via improved data-driven analyses, health information technology systems and business process improvements.


Responsibilities:


  • Participating in highly functional and creative teams while building knowledge and working relationships across the Corporation.
  • Providing document analysis, information preparation, project management support (status reports, staffing, spreadsheets, etc.), deliverable preparation, and research.
  • Applying statistical analytics and software engineering techniques with the goal of improving access to, and security of, health data, patient-generated data, analyses, and interpretations of patient data for better public health outcomes.
  • Working with data privacy technology, such as Differential Privacy, for patient data to ensure privacy preservation for personal health information. Collecting lessons learned, addressing practicality and privacy guarantees for different sets of data.
  • Investigating the use of functional programming (FP) languages such as SCALA for supporting healthcare information exchange modules as part of FHIR Specification. Help to determine which health IT functionalities can best benefit from FP to be part of an OHS library.


Required Qualifications:


  • Must have already completed BA/BS degree and currently pursuing a graduate degree in a program related to health informatics, healthcare standards and interoperability, or healthcare data policies, and/or security.
  • Experience working in complex analysis and data intensive environments.
  • Ability to work with health IT standards – such as terminology standards (e.g., SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm, ICD-10-CM/PCS) or exchange standards (e.g., HL7 FHIR).
  • Experience with health informatics or software engineering techniques with the goal of improving access to health data, advancing, or developing new health data systems.
  • Preliminary knowledge of data privacy and related methodologies.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one open-source programming/data science tool (e.g., R, Python).
  • Understanding of the healthcare industry, clinical roles, government, and private healthcare organizations.
  • A track record of successfully delivering on deadlines.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Capable of thriving as part of a distributed team.


Desired Qualifications:


  • Experience with and/or exposure to EHR implementation and EHR clinical workflows.
  • Hands-on experience working with clinical informatics systems or clinical data modeling.
  • Familiarity with Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), Clinical Quality Language (CQL), FHIR Shorthand (FSH)
