Principal Gifts, Research, and Board Relations Intern

The External Relations division and Development department are primarily responsible for building lasting relationships with the many constituents of the Museum and for ensuring that the necessary funds are raised to meet the short- and long-term objectives established by the Board of Trustees and senior management. Development manages several perennial programs that together provide important annual operating funds for the institution. The division also devotes significant resources to the cultivation, solicitation, and recognition of individuals, foundations, corporations, and government agencies for support of the Museum’s priorities.

Under the general direction of the Director of Principal Gifts and Liaison to the Board of Trustees, the intern will support the Principal Gifts, Board Relations, and Research teams.
 
Working with the Board Relations Officer, the intern will undertake various administrative duties with focus on the planning and execution of the Board of Advisors Spring Meeting in June. The goals are to spark interest in governance in non-profit organizations, meet Board leaders, and learn more about current governance topics.
 
Working with the Principal Gifts and Research team, the intern will undertake a range of tasks and longer-term projects to provide the highest level of service, attention and recognition to the institution’s top donors. The goals are to develop professional writing skills, gain database experience, and to learn about the donor cultivation and stewardship process at a nonprofit arts institution.
 
Projects:
  • Assist with planning and preparation for the Board of Advisors Spring Meeting
*Prepare, send, and track invitations
*Coordinate materials for the Meeting packet
*(if possible), Attend the Spring Meeting to assist with event set-up, speaker run-through,
attendee check-in and reception to follow
  • Assist in administrative preparation for Trustee and Advisor other board enrichment programs and events
*Prepare, send, and track invitations
*Coordinate materials
*Draft event briefing
*(If possible), attend to assist with event set-up, speaker run-through, attendee check-in
  • Assist with the collection and maintenance of information about Board members.
  • Assist with Principal Gifts research
  • Compile proposals
* Create updated proposal templates
*Assist with proposal research, drafting, and revising
  • Draft donor communication
* Assist with acknowledgments, outreach about Museum news
  • Assist in updating the constituent database (Tessitura), running and analyzing reports
  • Archiving, filing, and shredding documents
 
The selected intern will gain exposure to the MFA’s encyclopedic collection, proficiency in Tessitura, a Customer Relations Management (CRM) software very popular among cultural institutions, and will develop and adapt writing skills for application in a professional environment. Through participation in the Museum Pathways and Practices course, the intern will hear from museum professionals eager to share their unique experiences and to arrange time with peers across the institution, with the goal of helping the successful applicant explore and refine their own career path.
 
Intern must be able to commit a minimum of <> to <> hours per week, between 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday, from Jan 23 through April 28, (including 2 hours on Fridays attending the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course.)

Responsibilities:
  • In supporting the Board Relations Officer, key areas include assisting with the planning and logistics of the Board of Advisors Spring Meeting, assisting with planning other board enrichment programs, and learning database management.
  • In supporting the Principal Gifts team, key areas include assisting with drafting communications to donors, proposal development, data management, and other tasks related to donor stewardship and events.
 
Intern must be able to commit to onsite work 14 hours per week, between 9am-5pm, Monday through Friday, from Jan 23 through April 28, (including 2 hours on Fridays attending the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course.)

Qualifications:
  • Enrolled in an undergraduate program concurrent with the internship period; this undergraduate internship opportunity prefers juniors or seniors
  • Demonstrable interest in governance, arts administration, and fundraising while learning more about the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and contributing to the operations of the Development department
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  • Strong writing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
  • Experience with and an interest in data management
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize assignments and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Interest in arts administration
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong professional demeanor and exemplary client service skills
  • Ability to work onsite 14 hours per week (between 9am-5pm Monday through Friday,) between January 23 and April 28--including up to 2 hours per week on Fridays attending the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course
