2023 Charles Schwab Accounting Internship (Denver, CO)

Because interns are considered a primary pipeline for full-time opportunities, every intern candidate must be eligible for full-time employment upon graduation and must also meet the following requirements:
  • Enrolled in a current undergraduate or graduate program tracking to graduate betweenAugust 2023 and June 2024
  • Ability to work full time and be on-site at assigned Schwab location during the 9-week program (June 5 to August 4, 2023)
  • Have specific skills as specified by the hosting Business Track

Finance – Controllers – SOX Compliance and Internal Control Audits Intern
The Sarbanes-Oxley Compliance Office (SCO) performs risk assessment, scoping, testing, concluding, and results reporting for the annual assessments of management’s Internal Control over Financial Reporting (ICFR) for SOX and FDICIA, and the annual assessments of management’s Internal Control over Compliance (ICOC) for SEA Rule 17a-5. The SCO supports Schwab’s mission by assessing controls addressing the completeness and accuracy of Schwab’s financial reporting, and Schwab’s financial reporting is used to secure financing so the company can meet the needs of our clients. In addition, the SCO assesses ICOC addressing the protection of client assets, which gives clients comfort to invest their assets with Schwab.

The intern will have a unique opportunity to split their internship with the SCO’s Business Process and IT testing specialists to allow them to explore multiple areas of the assessment and to discover the areas in which they excel and that they most enjoy. They will partner with members of the SCO to conduct walkthrough meetings, to perform testing and issue analysis, and to provide testing results. Through these steps, the intern will gain exposure to many areas of the company and will begin to learn how Schwab is structured and operates.


What you’ll do:

  • Support a risk-based approach to Schwab’s annual ICFR and ICOC assessments by seeking and applying understanding of Schwab’s risks and controls
  • Lead discussions with process control performers across the company to create and update process documentation, flowcharts, and risk assessments
  • Collaborate with management, Schwab’s external auditor, and other Schwab testing programs to enhance the ICFR and ICOC environments
  • Develop recommendations to correct control deficiencies and provide ideas for process improvements
  • Perform and document high-quality work in accordance with team policies, standards, and procedures
  • Assist in other project assessment activities, such as system conversion testing and acquisition integrations
  • Encourage and participate in a high performing, engaged, and positive team environment
  • Improve and innovate the SCO’s assessment and operational approaches, including with automation and data visualization tools


What you have:

  • Planned final graduation date between December 2023 and June 2024 earning a bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, or Information Technology
  • Curiosity to learn how to assess the design and operating effectiveness of business and IT processes
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Excellent organizational skills, enabling one to manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to build strong relationships and to work effectively with various levels of the organization

Colorado Compensation
Target Total Compensation – $25.00/hour
