Research Intern - Biomaterials (Winter 2023)

Project Description

We seek multiple full-time research interns from multiple disciplines in life sciences (biology, biochemistry, physiology), engineering (biological, chemical, biomedical, materials, mechanical), related fields (chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences), or computational sciences. Candidates must be enrolled in a degree program. Some research experience (4+ months) is preferred. Our research group, under Jeff Karp and Yuhan Lee, consists of engineers, chemists, biologists, and materials scientists. We focus on developing rapidly translatable and radically simple solutions to challenges in drug delivery, diagnostics, and materials science.

The intern will be responsible for multiple tasks:
-       Synthesizing and screening new materials
-       Designing new in vitro and ex vivo screening models
-       Characterizing, validating, and quality controlling materials
-       Analyzing and visualizing data sets

The following skills are highly desired:
-       Basic wet lab skills (pipetting, making buffers, aseptic technique)
-       Device design and fabrication (soft lithography, solvent casting, heat molding, 3D printing, machining, laser cutting)
-       Biochemical analyses (RT-PCR, SDS-PAGE, Western blots, ELISA, Luminex, histopathology, immunohistochemistry)
-       Chemical synthesis, purification and analyses (HPLC/UPLC, mass spectrometry, mechanical analyses)

Students will be supervised and and mentored by research fellows and faculty from MIT and Harvard Medical School. Interns are expected to become highly self-directed in conceiving and testing hypotheses, and to strive to maximize the benefits of their time with us. Free transportation to BWH from Metro Boston area is available through Mass General Brigham shuttle services.

Positions are available ASAP (~January 2023). Please specify in your cover letter the date you would be available to start, and until what month you can stay. We require full-time (35+ hr/wk) commitment for 6+ months. Address applications to James Baylis (jbaylis@bwh.harvard.edu).
