The role: 

Join our team in Region 2 - Northwest Oregon as a senior hydraulic engineer! In this role, you will be responsible for planning, directing and designing hydraulic aspects for major transportation projects in support of project delivery, maintenance, construction and emergency response. You will use your hydraulic engineering expertise to perform bridge and culvert hydraulic analyses, water quality design and storm water detention. Apply today!

A day in the life:

  • Act as the lead engineer on hydraulic design problems and coordinate the work of hydraulic designers and consultants.
  • Perform evaluations, calculations, quantity estimates and other tasks to prepare construction contract plans.
  • Create three dimensional computer models using InRoads and Microstation software.
  • Use software programs to calculate flows for drainage design.
  • Provide final plans, specifications and estimates.
  • Act as the administrator for consultant contracts which includes developing the scope of work, consultant selection and negotiation.
  • Check contract invoices for payment, develop and administer work orders and review and accept consultant designs.
  • Provide support and mentorship to other designers.
  • Complete forensic hydraulic engineering evaluations of transportation facilities.
  • Participate in the development of hydraulics standards which includes policies, procedures, guidance and permits to meet water regulations.
  • Work is mostly performed in an office environment and requires frequent field inspections which may involve exposure to heavy traffic, inclement weather, rough terrain and construction equipment.

What we need:
  • A valid Professional Engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering AND three (3) years of journey level professional engineer experience.

Note: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain comity within six months of hire.

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in hydraulic engineering as a license professional engineer.
  • Experience as a member or leader of an engineering team which included quality control reviews of the work performed by other engineers.
  • Experience with field investigations, office analyses and hydraulic design for complex projects.
  • Experience delivering presentations at conferences or public meetings.
  • Experience representing the agency or organization to other agencies, academics or in regards to legal matters.
  • Experience with storm water design (water quality, detention), open channel design (natural, artificial, closed conduit), culvert design (rehabilitation, trenchless technology, fish passage), bridge design (hydraulics analysis, scour) or streambank restoration.
  • Experience in computer aided design (CAD) and 3-D modeling.
  • Knowledge and experience with specialty hydraulic design software such as HEC-RAS, HydroCAD, HY8 or SMS 2D hydraulic software.
