The role: 
Join our team in Central Point! As a seasonal dispatcher, you will monitor the operation of the transportation system, respond to incidents impacting the system and coordinate transportation related communications and services among internal and external customers. This is a seasonal position that is expected to last approximately 6 months from date of hire. Seasonal positions are regular status, benefits eligible positions, which occur, terminate and recur periodically or regularly.

A day in the life:
 
  • Monitor transportation system conditions and provide information on operational impacts including damage to highway features, facilities and employee safety.
  • Monitor roadway and weather conditions.
  • Input damage reports and notify maintenance crews about needed repairs.
  • Input or review construction project updates in traveler information systems and notify construction crews of incidents within work zones.
  • Implement detour routes including dispatching of staff and equipment.
  • Periodically monitor and test device status to ensure availability for use when needed.
  • Work in an area with moderate noise levels caused by equipment and radio transmissions.
  • Restricted to workstations for long periods, sometimes in a close working area.
  • Continual and consistent alertness and attention to monitoring a variety of technical equipment including multiline phone system and multichannel radio system.
  • Answer multiple phone and radio inquiries that are frequently occurring simultaneously.
  • Handle multiple conflicting priorities that sometimes involve life threatening decisions and communicating with the public often under confusing, emotional or crisis conditions.
  • May be required to work extended hours including all hours of the day and night and holidays due to emergencies or increased temporary workload.
  • Will be required to work day shift, swing shift, flexible shifts, alternating shifts, nights and weekends.
  • Must be able to pass an initial and maintain annual CJIS/OSP background checks for LEDS operation.

What we need:
Two years of public contact experience that includes gathering, relaying, and providing information to others AND evaluating activities or incidents, and determining an appropriate course of action. One year of this experience must include receiving and dispatching emergency requests using radio equipment, telephone, and/or computer.

Successful completion of a Certified Emergency Communications Course may substitute for the one year of specialized experience.
 
Special requirements:
  • If the successful candidate, you must become LEDS certified and maintain current certification within 90 days of hire.
  • You must be able to type 4500 keystrokes per hour (KPH). If selected to interview, you will be required to take a typing test.
  • You must be able to complete a “CritiCall” test, which we will administer, if selected to interview.
