Location: In-Person, UC Hastings campus in San Francisco

San Francisco Scholars
SEO Scholars provides motivated, low income public high school students with a rigorous out-of-school supplemental academic curriculum, college guidance and the leadership development necessary to gain admission to, and succeed at, competitive colleges and universities. SEO Scholars San Francisco is the first expansion region for this program and aims to replicate for Bay Area students the stellar outcomes that the program has delivered in New York City. POSITION OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES
Associate Instructors are a part of the on-site instructional team but are not assigned to teach or lead specific classrooms. Instead, these individuals push into various math classrooms to support students and other instructors, collaborate in grading homework, and provide coverage when a class’s usual instructor is absent on Saturdays throughout the semester. Associate Instructors will be assigned to support 9th or 10th grade math for all programming dates.

THE SCHEDULE

10th Grade Instructors: Orientations: 01/19-01/26, Programming: 01/28-05/13
9th Grade Instructors: Orientations: 02/07-02/23, Programming: 02/25-05/13
There will also be future opportunities for Summer and Fall semesters
 
Please note that our 9th Grade program runs on a different schedule than our 10th Grade program. This should be considered when determining your grade-level interest and will be clarified in the interview process. You will be placed with one grade level.
 
Our 10th Grade program runs for 11 Saturdays throughout the semester:
  • Orientations will be held between 01/19-01/26. There will be on-site training during the day on January 21st, 2023. More details regarding orientation logistics will be provided when onboarded.
  • 10th Grade programming is held on campus from 9:10 AM to 4:00 PM (PT) on the following Saturdays: 1/28, 2/4, 2/11, 3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 4/1, 4/8, 4/22, 4/29, 5/13
  • In-person programming for 10th Grade will take place at the UC Hastings campus in San Francisco, off the Civic Center BART stop
  • 10th grade Associate Instructors support Math lessons to class sizes of approximately 20 students per class.
  • Individual schedules will vary within the 9:10am-4:00pm instructional timeframe; half-day options also available.
 
Our 9th Grade program runs for 9 Saturdays throughout the semester:
  • Orientations will be held between 02/7-02/23. There will be on-site training during the day on February 11th, 2023. More details regarding orientation logistics will be provided when onboarded.
  • 9th Grade programming is held on campus from 9:10 AM to 4:00 PM (PT) on the following Saturdays: 2/25, 3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 4/1, 4/8, 4/22, 4/29, 5/13
  • In-person programming for 9th Grade will take place at the UC Hastings campus in San Francisco, off the Civic Center BART stop
  • 9th grade Associate Instructors support Math lessons to class sizes of approximately 20-30 students per class.
  • Individual schedules will vary within the 9:10am-4:00pm instructional timeframe; half-day options also available.

INSTRUCTIONAL CONTENT

  • 10th Grade Math Curriculum: Precalculus
  • 9th Grade Math Curriculum: Numbers and Operations

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Content Preparation – Read, work through, and internalize all lesson plans and materials provided by SEO prior to Saturday Academy instruction. Implement thoughtful adjustments to pacing and activities based on specific student needs.
  • Instruction & Facilitation – Support instructor to facilitate lessons. When asked to lead a class, follow provided lesson plans and meet lesson objectives, abiding by SEO’s articulated criteria for rigorous instruction and student engagement. Blend digital learning resources like Desmos and Brightspace, our learning management system, in an in-person classroom prioritizing engagement and connection. Hold high expectations for the Scholars, use protocols for student-driven discussion and group work, and promote depth of understanding via questioning.
  • Grading and Record-Keeping – In collaboration with 9th and 10th grade instructors, calculate grades according to stipulations in provided lesson plans and provide actionable, growth-oriented feedback to students. Support the 9th and 10th grade instructors to complete all grading in a timely manner and keep electronic gradebook up to date on Brightspace (SEO’s Learning Management System).
  • Tutoring - Provide academic support to students with SEO or non-SEO assignments during the designated time for Academic Office Hours on program days.
  • Classroom Culture – Project an energetic, engaging, and approachable persona to promote students’ connection to the content, investment in the learning experience, and positive relationship to all members of the community.
  • Collaboration with SEO Staff and Other Instructors– Plan and work alongside math instructors to support Scholar success. Attend all scheduled meetings, check-ins, training, and debriefs and respond to all emails in a timely manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree
  • Knowledgeable with research-based, culturally responsive, equity-driven, and anti-oppressive instructional practices
  • Expertise and depth of knowledge in Math
  • Comfortable with and skilled at working with and navigating technological learning systems
  • Demonstrated dedication to closing the opportunity gap for underserved and underrepresented students
  • Relevant experience working with young people

*Teaching certification is not required
 
COMPENSATION
Associate Instructors are compensated on a competitive hourly rate scale that starts at $40/hour and increases each semester based on tenure with the organization as an SEO Instructor. This position averages 8 hours per week.
The compensation listed reflects what SEO believes it will pay for this position at the time of this posting. Consistent with applicable law, compensation will be determined based on the skills, qualifications, and experience of the applicant along with the requirements of the position, and SEO reserves the right to modify this pay range at any time.
