NMR Spectroscopist

POSITION TITLE: NMR Spectroscopist-Pasternack Lab

The NMR Spectroscopist will participate in the daily operations of the NMR Core Facility.  The NMR core facility currently has six high resolution NMR spectrometers: two AVIII HD 600 NMRs, both equipped with CryoProbes, AV NEO 500 equipped with BBFO Smart probe, AV III 400 equipped with BBFO probe, AV NEO 399 equipped with BBFO Smart probe, and JNM-ECZ400 equipped with 5mm Royal Probe. Four of the six spectrometers are also equipped with sample changers. The NMR staff members are responsible for all routine maintenance on all spectrometers, software updates, NMR data archiving, cryogenic service to all spectrometers, as well as other related third-party software for off-line data processing and NMR time scheduling.
The NMR Core Facility is an open access facility serving over 250 researchers from 26 research groups within Scripps Research. The NMR Spectroscopist is responsible for training researchers in the proper use of the NMR spectrometers in the Core Facility, assisting/advising users in advanced NMR methods for their research projects, and ensuring that the facility’s research support capabilities are maintained in an optimal state.

  • Train new NMR facility users in the spectrometers’ operation
  • Assist users in assessing their experimental needs; acts as a resource by fielding questions and offering instrument training and expert guidance in available methods. 
  • Perform more advanced experiments not available as a self-service option to users. 
  • Perform routine spectrometer maintenance, cryogen fills and instrument repairs. 
  • Perform computer maintenance and data archiving.
  • Ph.D. with background in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related disciplines preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and train others
  • Ability to effectively organize own time, and that of others, to accommodate user needs and be responsive to the user base in both a timely and equitable manner
  • Excellent experimental design and data analysis skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate with a diverse array of people from a wide variety of cultural and educational backgrounds, individually or in groups
  • Excellent computer skills
  •  This position works in a laboratory.

Employee must be able to traverse stairs. This position may also include utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE) and working in an environment that contains biohazardous materials. May also include stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine, exposure to cold or hot temperatures.
COMPENSATION: The expected hiring range for this position is $53,082 to $66,435 per year, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
