Technical Research Assistant I , HIV Infectious Disease (ID: 3223200)

We are looking for a highly motivated person to join us in studies of HIV latency and the development of novel approaches to cure HIV. The anticipated earliest start date for this position is January 2023. Projects include studies of virus reservoir dynamics and novel strategies to eradicate latent HIV. Virus work may involve HIV-1, HIV-2, and/or HTLV-1. The ideal candidate will be motivated to study the biology of the immune system and retroviral pathogens. Approaches that we use to address these issues include molecular biology, virology, cell and tissue culture, drug susceptibility assays, flow cytometry, deep sequencing, and integrated single cell analyses. The applicant will work under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator, perform duties in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, and conduct a variety of experiments with established methodologies. A 2-year commitment is preferred.
All skills will be taught, but some prior experience with laboratory techniques, such as molecular biology, cell biology, and sterile technique, is essential.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  1. Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine tests following established methodologies. Routine tests may include virus RNA extraction, PCR, DNA sequencing, real-time PCR, plasma and PBMC isolation from whole blood, PBMC subpopulation isolation, and drug susceptibility assays with HIV-1 and HIV-2.
  2. Prepares and maintains cell cultures and virus stocks. This work will include quantitative virus outgrowth assays and some work with HIV-infected human tissues.
  3. Records data, summarizes, and analyzes results using basic statistics.
  4. Prepares laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments, and equipment.
  5. Maintains supplies inventory in accordance with departmental procedures.
  6. Attends weekly lab meetings and discusses progress of work regularly with supervisor.
  7. All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences or related field required

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 
  1. Interested in a career in biomedical research
  2. Strong organizational skills, including the ability to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously
  3. Sound degree of computer literacy
  4. Ability to record and analyze data using basic statistics
  5. Ability to perform a variety of routine tests and prioritize work
  6. Excellent written, documentation and oral communication skills required.
  7. Ability to demonstrate high levels of professionalism
