Data Scientist Intern (Remote or Hybrid)

About the Role: 
A Data Scientist Intern at Thaddeus is responsible for overseeing the collection, storage and interpretation of data for business. Their duties include sifting through data points to create organized categories, comparing data points to current organization processes and writing reports outlining business predictions or proposals. They will use their knowledge of coding and other computer programming tactics to automate data collection and storage tasks. Their job is to work closely with Thaddeus’ departments to pull data following department decisions or initiatives to weigh their success. They may also be responsible for creating a system for collecting and storing data within company databases. 
The Data Scientist Intern will receive direct supervision from the Development Manager under the Development Department and will get the chance to work in a self-organized team setting under the Software Development Committee. 
 
(Note: this is an unpaid internship role) 
 
Responsibilities: 
A Data Scientist’s job is to use data to help the businesses make decisions. Here are some of the duties and responsibilities you may have as a Data Scientist Intern at Thaddeus: 
  • Collecting data through means such as analyzing business results or by setting up and managing new studies 
  • Transferring data into a new format to make it more appropriate for analysis 
  • Creating new, experimental frameworks to collect data 
  • Building tools to automate data collection 
  • Searching through large data sets for usable information 
  • Creating reports and presentations for business uses 
  • Correlating similar data to find actionable results 
  • Participate in our Buddy system once assimilated and act as a mentor/point of contact for new interns transitioning into your team during their induction and onboarding process 
  • Perform other assigned duties, as needed 
 
Qualifications: 
Required:  
  • Pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, and/or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience 
  • Ability to communicate complex data in a simple, actionable way 
  • Ability to visualize data in the most effective way possible for a given project or study 
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Familiarity with data management tools 
  • Ability to work independently with little instructions and a strong attention to details 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.) 
  • Access to appropriate technology, internet connection and ability to function in a virtual capacity via Microsoft Teams 
Preferred:  
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) 
  • Pursuing or obtained a graduate degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, etc., and/or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience 
  • Strong academic performance in coding classes  
  • Exceptional organizational and collaboration skills  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Teams and OneNote, 8x8 Work, and Adobe Creative Suite (especially Adobe Acrobat DC) 
 
Learning Objectives: 
  • Interns will learn how to interact the data with crafted applications on small companies. 
  • Interns will participate on self-organized teams and learn about Agile framework in practice.
  • Interns will demonstrate skill in data management.
  • Interns will apply data science concepts and methods to solve problems in real-world contexts and will communicate these solutions effectively

 
Time Commitment and Working Conditions: 
  • Due to COVID-19, the responsibilities for this role can be performed 100% remotely, on-site, or as a hybrid experience  
  • Must be available to work 10-15 hours per week  
  • Must be available for the following VIRTUAL weekly meetings: 
  • Weekly All Staff Meeting: Mondays 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM PST (starting dec. 1st)
  • Operations Department Meeting: Fridays 1:00 - 2:00 PM PST 
  • Weekly Committee Meeting: Fridays 2:30-3:30 PST 
  • Weekly Core Meeting: TBD
  • Must be able to commit to this 6-month to 1-year internship (accommodations can be made for school schedules, as well as exams)
