Position Summary:
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University at Buffalo is committed to training planners who contribute to designing and planning a just and equitable future in partnership with communities.
Our strategic plan – for the entire school and the Master’s program in Urban Planning – calls for centering racial equity and social justice both in what we teach and how we teach about cities and regions.
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University at Buffalo (UB), The State University of New York, invites candidates to apply for two tenure-stream positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of August 1, 2023. We invite applications from researchers whose work addresses social justice and the city, including areas such as (1) Blacks and the city, (2) environment, land use, and climate justice, (3) transport/mobility justice, (4) big data, technological, and algorithmic justice, (5) housing and community development, and (6) social, political, and institutional determinants of health inequities. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work demonstrates a clear focus on addressing structural drivers of inequities, such as anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, and racism in planning scholarship and practice, in the US and international contexts.
- Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Planning, or a related field (e.g., Geography, Architecture, Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Economics, etc.) by the time of appointment.
- We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement existing strengths across the Department and the School of Architecture and Planning, which include expertise in extreme weather vulnerability and governance, water resources governance, food systems planning, planning for health equity, the Global South, transportation infrastructure, building resilience and energy efficiency, sustainable housing, affordable housing, historic preservation, social justice, environmental design, and community engagement.
- We are especially interested in candidates who can serve a diverse community of students, faculty members, and community partners, and share our core vision of helping all constituents reach their full potential within a professional culture that values equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- The successful candidates will be expected to teach courses and mentor students in the undergraduate program in environmental design and graduate programs (including a new MS Degree in Global Health and International Development). Candidates should be prepared to teach using varied pedagogical modalities including studio/workshop/seminars, etc.
- The candidates are expected to work across the University to build interdisciplinary approaches to teaching, service, and research, and be prepared to seek external funding for research.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Planning or a closely related field by the start date of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Strong evidence of research excellence (e.g., research statement, a record of publications or forthcoming publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals, presentations at significant field-related conferences, and awards).
- Strong evidence of excellence in teaching (e.g., a statement of teaching philosophy, sample course syllabi, teaching evaluations, and teaching awards).
- Demonstrated experience in community-engaged and/or practice-oriented research will be considered an asset.
- Demonstrated highly productive and creative scholarly record in research on social justice.
- Evidence or promise of research excellence in obtaining competitive extramural funding (e.g., NSF, NIH, USDA, etc.).
- Strong capacity and potential for outstanding teaching contributions, including planning studio and seminar courses, at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
