What We Can Achieve Together:
The Recreational Technician (RT) works to advance our Inspiring People for Nature Strategy by creating positive public use experiences on TNC preserves. They will assist with building, planning, and maintaining recreational amenities on TNC preserves. The RT will develop and implement a program to engage the public in maintenance and trail systems and other recreation amenities as a means to create awareness and interest in conservation. Other duties include maintenance of tools and equipment, on-foot trail assessments to determine and prioritize maintenance needs, management of recreation construction projects, and will ensure timely completion of maintenance tasks.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
  • Work will be done in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Work will often be done independently and/or under minimal and/or distant supervision; may make some independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.
  • Frequently uses hand and power tools to repair/build wooden bridges, repair/build trail tread, construct drainage structures, and construct stone features.
  • May lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers to complete trail maintenance and construction activities.
  • Develops and executes recreation amenity maintenance and work plans for nine TNC recreation preserves.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating, contracting, and managing vendors, assisting with budget development and supporting fundraising staff.
  • Networks with diverse groups, including landowners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to advance our Inspiring People for Nature strategy.

What You’ll Bring:
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field and 2 years related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects.
  • Experience handling standard business communications.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in trail building and/or planning trail systems or recreational amenities.
  • 1 – 2 years related experience in recreational use planning, ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with use of common hand tools, demonstrated experience with basic power tool and rough carpentry
  • Some experience managing volunteers or entry level staff.
  • Knowledge/understanding of current trends and practices in trail construction, recreational use management and natural resource preservation/conservation or similar field.
  • Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
