Systems Engineer III

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, located on the North Shore of Long Island, is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer III with a solid understanding of Microsoft Exchange and the Windows Server operating system to join our IT Department.

Responsibilities include administering a complex site alone or assisting in the administration of a larger site. Initiating new responsibilities and helping to develop plans for the future of the site/network. Evaluating and/or recommending critical IT purchases; ability to appropriately recommend and influence the purchasing process. Will be responsible for managing junior-level system engineers. Performing weekend on-call functions. Performing additional IT-related tasks, as assigned by management.

Position Requirements
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree

EXPERIENCE: 3 years of system administration experience

Required Background Stays current with changes in the industry, and their ramifications on the organization Bachelor’s degree in computer science/related field or equivalent IT experience. Ten to fifteen years of system administration experience. Five years of experience with primary responsibilities focused on Microsoft Exchange Management.

Required Skills Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of writing purchase justifications, training users in complex topics, making presentations to an internal audience, and interacting positively with upper management. Ability to prioritize between multiple ongoing tasks and projects. Independent problem-solving, self-direction. Strong documentation skills. SME in on-prem Microsoft Exchange 2016, 2019, and Exchange Online Ability to design, develop, implement, and manage on-prem and cloud Exchange infrastructure. Experience planning and performing Exchange migrations. Ability to identify and mitigate architectural risks in Exchange infrastructure. Uses best practices to ensure the continued stability and security of the production Exchange environment. Familiarity with other mail systems such as Sendmail and Postfix. Excellent PowerShell scripting abilities. Comfortable with Active Directory domain administration. Understands the needs of a mixed Linux, Mac, and Windows desktop environment interfacing with Microsoft Exchange and Active Directory. Familiarity with fundamental networking/distributed computing environment concepts; working knowledge of NFS/SMB/FTP/SSH & HTTP; authentication via OpenLDAP and Active Directory; configuration and administration of DHCP and DNS; managing multiple domains; and routing concepts.
