Teacher Residency ( Earn Teaching Certification + Master's Degree)

Program Overview


The Norman C. Francis Teacher Residency (NCFTR) is a first-of-its-kind partnership, launched by Xavier University of Louisiana, New Schools for New Orleans, and a group of New Orleans charter schools. This program is designed for individuals who are committed to a long-term teaching career in New Orleans, but who have not yet pursued a teacher certification.

This program offers aspiring K-12 educators a pathway to a career in teaching through combining targeted graduate coursework with on-the-job training. Residents will earn a Master of Arts in Teaching from Xavier University and a teaching placement with one of our charter school partners.


Qualifications


1. Bachelor’s degree with cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher required (if currently in school, expected Bachelor’s degree by May 2023).


2 Passing scores for Praxis I (Core) and Praxis II (Subject tests).- Praxis Core currently waived in LA*


3. Must be willing to make a four-year commitment to teaching at one of our partner schools in New Orleans

4. Deep commitment to New Orleans students and to providing them with the educational opportunities they deserve. Previous experience working in schools and/or urban communities is a bonus but is not a requirement.


5. Ability to build relationships with diverse groups of people and to work as a part of his/her charter school and Xavier communities.


6. NCFTR prioritizes BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) candidates committed to becoming career educators and leaders in the New Orleans community. NCFTR highly encourages candidates of diverse identities and experiences to apply.

Compensation:


Residents will receive a $25,000 stipend during the first residency year to assist with living expenses and pay for Xavier’s student health insurance, as needed. In addition, the first year of graduate school tuition is covered by the program.
