Staff Communications Specialist – Portland or Vancouver
Maul Foster & Alongi, Inc. (MFA) is seeking a full-time entry-level Staff Communications Specialist to work in our Portland or Vancouver office. As a Staff Communications Specialist, you will help our clients develop their strategies and tell their stories about projects that strengthen communities, clean up past environmental damage, and more – all while developing your own communications skills. Every day, you will work with staff and clients in public and private settings to deliver on our client’s objectives; design and produce effective communication materials (e.g., presentations, meeting notes/plans, key messages, web, and collateral copy); and work with your teammates to juggle evolving project deadlines.
As a Staff Communications Specialist, you will…
- Work closely with project managers and a variety of clients – drafting content, posting on social media, creating communications plans, providing press releases, researching historical information, and attending meetings.
- Design and prepare content of communications materials including but not limited to presentations, newsletters, web copy, and social media posts.
- Participate in client and public meetings both in-person and virtually.
- Become familiar with appropriate federal, state, and local regulations and client requirements.
- Have significant client contact.
- Assist with budget preparation and cost estimation.
- Work independently and solicit input from mentors.
To thrive in this role, you must have…
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, planning, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- Ability and desire to work collaboratively with a team and provide excellent support to teammates and clients.
- Clear, concise, and strategic verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of the use of digital communication tools such as social media, websites, and web-based surveys in a professional setting.
- Desire to work with the public in virtual and in-person settings, including open houses, fairs, farmers markets, and other public gatherings.
- Poise, maturity, and confidentiality to participate in meetings with clients.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience utilizing social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite, TweetDeck, Sprout Social) a plus!
