Zone Horticulturist

Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy
Title: Zone Horticulturist
Type of Position: 9 month seasonal, Full-time, non-exempt

The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, the non-profit responsible for the management and care of The Rose Kennedy Greenway, seeks Zone Horticulturists to join our team for the 2022 season. The Conservancy’s team of horticulture professionals care for nearly 17 acres of vibrant green space and extensive gardens including formal gardens, meadows, and native plantings in the heart of downtown Boston using ecological and organic practices. The Conservancy has been a pioneer in ecological horticulture; among the first in the nation to care for a public park completely organically.

Responsibilities
Zone Horticulturists will use best ecological practices to perform the daily care and maintenance of landscape plants on The Greenway under the direction of the Lead Horticulturist, and lead volunteers and interns in performing horticultural tasks. Each Zone Horticulturist focuses on one of four park zones: Chinatown, Fort Point, Wharf District, and North End, and assumes responsibility for the care and maintenance of their zone.

  • Perform the daily horticultural care of the park landscape including, but not limited to, planting, pruning, weeding, watering, and grooming, focusing on one of four park zones.
  • Lead weekly Zone Volunteers in performing horticultural tasks , and report volunteer hours and activities.
  • Participate in weekly group Volunteer projects throughout the park providing support to the Lead Horticulturist in instructing, supervising, and engaging with Volunteers.
  • Follow safety policies promoting an overall culture of safety.
  • Participate in weekly horticulture team meetings, and provide updates on assigned zone and volunteer projects/ activities.
  • Maintain plant records.
  • Maintain horticulture tools and equipment in good working order.  
  • Maintain clean and organized work spaces.
 
Skills and qualifications

  • Minimum two years experience working in horticulture.
  • Degree or certification in Horticulture, a plus.
  • Working knowledge of New England landscape plants, a plus.
  • Ability to work productively independently, and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills to engage in professional teamwork, and maintain positive relationships with our Volunteers.
  • Experience working with volunteers, a plus.
  • Experience and/or interest in working in an organization dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Experience working with diverse audiences, a plus.
  • Valid US driver’s license in good standing.
  • Basic computer proficiency; ability to learn Google Workspace apps and forms.

Logistics
  • This is a full-time (5-day/40 hours-per-week) seasonal position which starts in mid-March and ends in December. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30am-3:30pm, but may include weekend, evening and holiday hours.
  • Must be able to work outside in all types of weather, kneel or stand for periods of time, and be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • All incoming employees will be required to comply with the Conservancy’s COVID-19 vaccination policy.
  • The accepted candidate will be required to have a successful completion of a CORI background check.
  • The hourly rate for this position is $21, plus overtime.
