Bloomberg Arts 2023 Undergrad Mentor

The Bloomberg Arts Mentor program is a paid summer internship for postgraduate and undergraduate college students with a strong interest in the arts and culture of New York City. This is an excellent opportunity for students who would like to gain experience in arts and educational program management and guidance for teens as they prepare to transition to college.

The program is sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the New York City cohort is administered by the Studio Institute, a nonprofit organization that is committed to apprenticeship-based learning, professional development for teachers, visual arts curricula, and sharing arts education research with communities nationwide. Studio Institute partners with a broad range of arts and cultural institutions to provide meaningful career training and expose interns to the multiple professional pathways in the arts. (See below for a sample of our partnering organizations.)

Mentors support college and career readiness classes and give oversight to rising senior high school students who will be 1) interning at arts organizations around the city and 2) participating in college support and professional development workshops and 3) attending arts and cultural field trips across the five boroughs.

Qualifications: Candidates should have a deep interest in the arts and have exceptional organizational skills. Candidates must also have strong writing and editing skills and experience working on virtual platforms, such as Zoom and Google Meets. Applicants should indicate in their cover letter or resume any design, photography, or film experience. They must be legally allowed to work in the US. In accordance with applicable law, all employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Mandatory Dates: The Bloomberg Arts Mentors program runs for approximately ten weeks from June 13 to August 18. Mentors will work part time (average of 25 hours/ week). Note that these dates may be subject to change according to changing COVID-19 policies and may include weekend dates and evening events.

Payment: Undergraduates are paid $22/hour for their work, including training.

Program Details: Throughout the intern orientation sessions and the eight-week program, Mentors will be a role model for high school interns: they will model interpersonal communication skills and set workplace expectations. They will also assist with administrative responsibilities, including, but not limited to, the following:
  • Mentor high school interns working at cultural institutions throughout New York City in the Bloomberg Arts Internship Program, being active listeners to each intern’s respective journey
  • Support high school interns through the college application process, offering guidance on college selection, navigating the Common App, and financing a college education; share your own college journey, and help students understand the life choices that they are making
  • Cultivate arts appreciation through chaperoning students during field trips to museums, outdoor installations, and parks; model genuine curiosity about the arts; encourage students to create authentic connections to art and culture through conversations
  • Provide reminders and timely feedback to interns regarding their personal statements for college, work assignments, schedules, and responsibilities
  • Collect and process weekly timesheets for high school interns and track interns’ assignments
  • Visit interns’ work sites to liaise with partnering organizations, and document interns’ internship work experiences
  • Manage photo-documentation of the Bloomberg Arts Internship Program, capturing quotes and taking photos of weekly Studio enrichment sessions
  • Oversee and assist with interns’ PowerPoint presentations for a culminating event.

Program Eligibility: Undergrad candidates must be current rising juniors or seniors in a college or university within the five boroughs of New York City, or must be permanent residents of the City. Undergrad applicants must be enrolled full time during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years.
