Preserve Management Assistant

WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Preserve Management Assistant (PMA) will participate in stewardship tasks on TNC preserves and protected partner lands (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and US Fish and Wildlife Service) across Central Minnesota. The working landscape for this position ranges across an 8-10 county area that includes the restoration and maintenance of prairie, savanna, forest and wetland ecosystems with the majority of the time spent stewarding prairies in West Central MN. 
Stewardship work will include (in approximate highest to lowest order of proportion of position obligations): prescribed fire implementation, removal and control of invasive plant species, native seed harvest, equipment maintenance, monitoring and data collection, and livestock fence installation and maintenance. Additional collateral tasks are likely, as well as multiple types of training opportunities. The PMA will regularly work with a 2-8 person crew, and be expected to periodically provide leadership for these crews. The PMA will work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
This position is based out of Kerkhoven, MN and pays $15.00 to $18.00 per hour depending on experience. Housing is provided at a shared crew house in the town of Kerkhoven with occasional overnight trips for stewardship projects across the working landscape (housing during these trips will be coordinated and provided for by TNC). The PMA position will run from April 11th, 2023 to October 27th, 2023.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • High school diploma or GED and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.       
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).         Experience working in a team environment.                                           
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, Wildland Firefighter Type II qualification, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).
