Assistant Horticulturalist/Educator Intern

Pay is $19 an hour and the internship will run from 5/15/23 to 8/31/2023. Start and end dates are negotiable. Please submit your resume and two letters of recommendation for consideration by April 28th, 2023. 

A great opportunity for those planning to work in horticulture, the landscaping sector, agriculture, the natural resource arena, or in environmental education. The interns will gain hands-on experience working at Prescott Park, a premier 15 acre park known regionally for its extensive annual and perennial flowerbeds. The park’s scenic location on the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth, NH and long standing reputation attracts thousands of visitors annually from all of New England and the eastern seaboard.

The ideal candidates will be directly involved with the care and maintenance of the park’s numerous flowerbeds through organic and sustainable methods. In addition to this overall care, the interns may be given personal responsibility of designing their own individual flowerbeds. The Interns will be guided weekly during the summer season with necessary instruction and responsibility details.
Aside from hands-on experience, Interns will also give tours of Prescott Park to the public and create publications of Prescott Park and other garden sites. Interns may also be assigned duties at other garden sites throughout the city.

Candidates should have an academic background or work experience and understand plants including their short and long term care and maintenance, identification skills of annuals or perennials would be helpful, and the ability to provide instruction and tours to the general public. This instruction will focus on plant care and maintenance, but may also diverge occasionally to cover other conservation driven topics, but keeping with the main goal of building overall plant skills, environmental awareness, and urban sustainability.
