Director of Annual Giving

Summary Description: 
Bishop’s Director of Annual Giving works collaboratively with Bishop’s Chief Advancement Officer (CAO), Director of Alumni Relations and other peer directors. This position is responsible for planning, and growing The Bishop’s School Annual Fund, the School’s annual giving campaign, and executing plans to grow the Annual Fund.  This position is responsible for creating engaging strategies for all of the School’s constituencies including but not limited to alumni, parents, past parents, faculty and staff, grandparents, and friends. The Director collaborates with the Advancement team and peers on campus to increase annual giving revenue, broaden the base of support, retain and upgrade donors through appropriate stewardship, and strengthen the major gift pipeline. The position co-supervises the Annual Giving and Family Relations Coordinator and provides guidance and support to the Annual Fund’s more than 100 volunteers. 
Anticipated Base Compensation Depending on Experience: $95,000 - $110,000 per annum
Minimum of bachelor’s degree, three (3) or more years of experience in advancement work and at least one (1) year of experience in annual giving or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Professional attire and presentation are required. Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge and greater fundraising best practices strongly preferred. Direct experience in annual giving fundraising logistics preferred. Must be available for occasional evening and weekend meetings and events.

  • Intermediate to high proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office, and willingness to become proficient in new programs, learning management systems, collaboration and productivity apps as needed.
  • Working knowledge of specialized software and online programs (i.e. Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Publisher, Blackbaud-Raiser’s Edge, Constant Contact and social networking programs).
  • Extensive knowledge of specialized prospect research and wealth screening programs
  • Embrace the special needs and requirements associated with an academic calendar and schedule which may necessitate fluctuations in workdays and hours.

Essential Functions and Specific Duties: 
  • Works closely with the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) to develop and position annual giving goals and priorities consistent with the School’s operating needs.
  • Works collaboratively with the CAO, Director of Parent & Family Relations, and Director of Alumni Relations to achieve aspirational goals for The Bishop’s Annual Fund, while developing strong solicitation, engagement, and stewardship programs for key constituencies.
  • Designs and manages an integrated, multi-channel strategy that engages donors, broadens participation, strengthens donor relationships, and ultimately builds the School’s culture of philanthropy.
  • Enhances the annual giving team’s use of digital strategies, technologies (texting platforms, social fundraising pages, etc.), and micro-campaigns to create a personal and positive experience for donors and broaden annual giving participation.
  • Uses data and analytics to monitor annual giving progress, identify opportunities, report on results, and learn from what the reports show.
  • Oversees a strategy to grow the number of 1909 Founder’s Society ($2,500 or more) leadership annual fund donors ($10,000 or more) and alumni donors by acquiring, retaining, and upgrading donors.
  • Benchmarks and continually improves the health of annual giving programs and strategies, identifying opportunities to improve and areas of strength to build upon.
  • Effectively communicates with both School and volunteer leadership (including the Board of Trustees, Alumni Board of Trustees, Advancement Committee, and Annual Giving Co-Chairs) regarding strategies and progress.
  • Works closely with the Alumni engagement team and volunteer leadership to develop strategy for and carry out the objectives of the alumni giving campaign, with special emphasis upon increasing Young Alumni giving.
  • Supports regional and reunion-based fundraising programs in close collaboration with the Director of Alumni Relations. Helps determine overall Reunion Giving strategy, helps recruit volunteer leadership, and supports class progress as needed to ensure Reunion financial goals are met.
  • Partners with the CAO in working closely with the Advancement Committee to set goals for and engage trustees.
  • Partners with prospect managers to ensure that communications and interactions help meet annual giving goals and move donor relationships forward.
  • Leads annual giving stewardship initiatives including design and stewardship strategies that communicate the impact of The Bishop’s Annual Fund and increase donor retention.
  • Oversees and the Annual Giving budget.
  • Collaborates with Marketing & Communications to ensure the School’s brand and overall marketing and communications strategy is used consistently and effectively and fosters a culture of philanthropy.
  • Remains conversant with the full range of Bishop’s philanthropic priorities, including future campaigns.
  • Stays abreast of annual giving best practices, industry trends, and emerging technologies.
  • Cultivates a professional network of colleagues at other institutions to serve as a resource for new ideas.
  • Attends alumni and parent events, Advancement Committee meetings, and schoolwide functions as needed to connect with constituents.
