Senior Research Technologist

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Senior Research Technologist will work independently under direction of PI. This person is expected to manage and conduct cutting edge research in somatic cell reprogramming, iPSC technology, and stem cell differentiation protocols, with an eye towards clinical translation, including performing and overseeing preclinical studies. Oversee daily operations of the research laboratory, including maintaining equipment/inventory, protocols, research inventories, daily budget and related inquiries. Includes supervision and orientation.  

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and implement independent research programs relating to stem cell production, testing, and differentiation protocols, including engineering and testing of cell lines and therapeutic candidates, and measurement of therapeutic responses in vitro and in vivo in expectation of translation to clinical trials in patients with Parkinson’s disease. 
Adapt and apply appropriate techniques relating to cell culture, small animal surgery, and immunohistochemistry techniques.  
Together with the Clinical and Scientific Directors, design, execute, and interpret research experiments; conduct experiments; modify/improve methods and techniques, draw conclusions and document results; maintain research records.
Collaborate on scientific publications and present research at scientific forums. 
Assist with hiring Laboratory Technicians and other staff as requested.  
Responsible for ordering supplies and tracking supply orders. 
Act as liaison to other departments and administrative sections of Hospital regarding safety, maintenance, research, finance, etc. Interact with outside contacts to coordinate research projects.
Maintain all equipment and inventory of supplies. Solve equipment/supply problems and schedule maintenance as needed. Stay abreast of new product/ equipment information; make proposals to Director for new equipment/products.
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:    
Bachelor's degree plus minimum one year post graduate education in biological science; master’s degree or equivalent preferred. 
Experience with cell culture, immunochemical labeling and histology required.
Some familiarity with small animal surgery and behavioral testing preferred.
At least 5 years of directly related and progressively more responsible experience expected.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:    
Demonstrated ability to work independently and productively.  
Strong research design and analytical skills and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to problem solve.             
Strong teaching skills and ability to supervise trainees and students.
Prior Leadership experience a plus

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Laboratory setting, MGH White 5 Parkinson’s Cell Therapy laboratory. To include significant time working in GMP-compliant conditions

May supervise lab assistants, technicians, and technologists
