Job Purpose
The Associate Director will provide intentional guidance and support to first-year students as they transition personally, socially, and academically to life at the College of Charleston as the Student Success Navigator. Specifically for students who identify as first-generation, AALANA (African American, Latinx, Asian, Native American) or BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), Pell recipients, students with disabilities, and students with undeclared major(s). This role involves high student interactions and mentoring to enhance retention, academic performance, and graduation of underrepresented student populations. The position, in partnership with the Associate Provost for Success, will set goals to strengthen the progress of students’ success.
The Associate Director will oversee the five-week summer bridge program (Speedy Consolidation and Transition Program (SPECTRA)) for historically under-represented (AALANA) high school graduates. Coordinate the Mentoring Matters initiative for SPECTRA participants. Develop programs that encourage dialogue on intercultural awareness and social justice issues to build inclusion with an environment of belonging. Manage the day-to-day functions and operations of the Multicultural Center. Responsible for MSPS assessment data and reports.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree is required, and two (2) years of related experience as an advisor or mentor in higher education working with first-year programs serving underrepresented (AALANA and BIPOC) student populations. A Master’s degree is preferred. Experience working in diversity or multicultural affairs is a must. Knowledge developing and providing programming, support, and resources that address cultural identity, gender, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience with best practices for first-year student experience and retention. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students. Must be able to work with diverse populations related to higher education, including students, parents, faculty, and staff; knowledge of FERPA student privacy regulations. Strong analytical, interpersonal, organizational, planning, time management, and attention to detail are required. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Comfortable with public speaking and delivering presentations. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exhibit good judgment. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed for effective program administration.
Working knowledge in all Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite programs. Ability to navigate Banner, Degree Works, SSI Advise, Cognos, Qualtrics, document management (BDM) software systems.
Additional Comments Regarding Position
Must be willing to work weekends and late evenings to host or assist with programming, events, workshops, and services for students, especially during peak times throughout the academic year. Professional development travel permitted when budgetary funds are available and approved by supervisor and the Division’s Executive Vice-President.

The Student Success Navigator extends timely support to students, monitors, and tracks progress of students, maintains communication with faculty and staff, collects and organizes student data, and produces regular reports utilizing MyPortal/SSI Advise.
Provide individualized outreach to a selected cohort of first-year students of diverse populations. Guide students to extracurricular activities, career, and campus resources—coordinate connections between students and the Academic Advising and Planning Center. Identify academically at-risk students and connect them to the Center for Academic Performance and Persistence. Maintain accurate and confidential electronic records of every student interaction, including in-person, phone, and online visits.
Collaborate with campus partners to develop, lead, and facilitate academic and social initiatives. Obtain and enter database information; analyze and interpret data; prepare reports. Serve on appropriate committees and represent the Office of Multicultural Student Programs and Services at campus-wide events. Perform other duties as assigned.

Direct the student recruitment process for the SPECTRA program. Responsible for enrolling 100-105 AALANA students for the annual SPECTRA summer program. Hire, supervise, and train SPECTRA Leaders. Oversee the SPECTRA written recruitment materials sent to prospective students. Work with Admissions staff using Sales Force (Target-x) customer relationship management system to create the SPECTRA Email Marketing drop dates. Revise SPECTRA notification letters and emails sent to accepted AALANA students. Serve as liaison to New Student Programs to secure early Orientation dates and provide Academic Advising with coursework selection for incoming students. Collaborate with other offices (Housing, Residence Life, Dining Services, Public Safety, Treasurer’s Office, and the Dean of Students) that support SPECTRA students’ residential experience. Manage SPECTRA’s online application acceptance process. Assist MSPS staff with distribution and inspection of forms returned to MSPS by participant prior to arrival to the SPECTRA program.

Responsible for the College-wide Mentoring Matters program for incoming underrepresented students. Recruit and identify faculty, staff, and upper-level students to mentor first-year students. Plan bonding activities and events. Provide mid-semester progress reports to the Director. Provide mentors with ongoing assistance when mentees require additional support and resources. Hire, train, and supervise student assistants to provide front desk coverage and day-to-day operational support for the Multicultural Center and programs, events, and other activities held by the Office of Multicultural Student Programs and Services.

Responsible for collecting assessment data and reports for the Office of MSPS. Assess the needs, learning outcomes, and satisfaction of students served by MSPS. Develop and revises BANNER attributes used for data collection and reporting. Ensure accuracy and completeness of data in the Banner. Input AALANA cohort details into databases that identify underrepresented student participants in various specialized academic or scholar programs at the College. Provide continual monitoring of records for students served by MSPS. Work closely with the Registrar’s Office to obtain student data reports through Banner & Cognos (class schedules, grades, etc.). Ensures student information is accurate, secure, and compliant with FERPA privacy regulations. Provide the Director with retention and enrollment data to evaluate underrepresented student persistence and satisfaction.
