Summary
The Nurse Manager of Camp Health Services is responsible for overseeing the overall operations of the health center for all camping and recreation programs, including summer camp, assisted travel, respite weekend, and winter camp. The Nurse Manager of Camp Health Services is responsible for meeting all healthcare needs of campers and staff and ensuring The League continues to be pre-emptive in reducing health risks. 

I. ACCOUNTABILITIES
Essential Functions
  • Oversees the day-to-day function of the camp health center when operational. 
  • Assess campers’ health to ensure we can safely serve them.
  • Supervise and delegate to all camp health center/care staff.
  • Take an active role in ensuring The League follows best practices in camp nursing. 
  • Administer medications & delegate medication administration to all Camping & Therapeutic Recreation’s medication administration staff.
  • Assist in ensuring all proper reporting of health issues is completed within the required timeframes.
  • Collaborate with the Case Manager to ensure the campers have provided the necessary paperwork. (i.e., correct medication orders; medications match the medication orders, medical form has been completed and signed by a physician in the appropriate time frame, etc.)
  • Collaborate with the Case Manager to prepare all needed paperwork for all camp programs. (i.e., assessment forms, Medication Administration Records, Bowel Charts, etc.)
  • Identify trends in illnesses/injuries and assist in developing strategies to reduce illness/injuries.
  • Take an active role in updating the Health Center’s Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure Camp exceeds the requirements of the American Camp Association (ACA), Board of Nursing, and Department of Health & Mental Hygiene.
  • Provide all required documentation for the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR), ACA, and League requirements.
  • Assist in the orientation and in-services of all Camping & Recreation staff, including providing the Medication Delegation. 
  • Communicate camper health concerns promptly to the camp director, parents/caregivers.
  • Keep the camp leadership team informed of current camp health issues.
  • Ensure all the paperwork and health center forms needed for the sessions are completed and reviewed before the session begins.
  • Reside on the campsite when programs are in session. 
Additional Functions:
  • Provide training for the League in CPR/ First Aid/ Communicable diseases, seizure awareness, etc. 
  • Ensuring all communication with the community (written or verbal) is professional in nature and appearance.
  • Representing The League and its services to the public in a positive manner.
  • Participating in the program’s quality assurance system.
II. Conditions
Equipment Used:
Equipment used may include but are not limited to the following: blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, first aid kit, pill crusher, nebulizer g/j/c tubes, suction, catheters, injections, computers, printer, fax machine, and copier, access to the internet, MS Office.
Performance Standard:
Ensure Camping & Recreation Department’s nursing program is carried out most effectively and efficiently as possible.
Work Environment:
During the summer, most of the day is spent in the health center, an air-conditioned building with standard lighting and available ventilation. During the weekends, the health center is a section of the dining hall with standard overhead florescent lighting and 65 – 80-degree air temperature and available ventilation.” Since this is a camp, the nurse is sometimes required to work outside.

Work Schedule:
Mid-May – Late August  
· When camp is in session 8 am – 10 pm and as needed during the overnight,
· Off when camp is not in session - will be expected to stay at camp during one break
September – Mid May
· Respite Weekends (~12 – 15 weekends/year) - Friday at 3:00 pm – Sunday at 3:00 pm
· Winter Camp 8 am – 10 pm while in session and as needed overnight 
· One day per week in the office (8hr days) for reviewing health forms/ preparing paperwork or leading training 
· Intake for Assisted travel trips (about 3 hours) and on-call during the trips (about 3 – 4 times per year). If staffing needs are unmet, the nurse may be required to attend the trip and assist the Travel Leader/Program Manager. 

 Requirements
  
III. QUALIFICATIONS
  • Maryland State (or compact state) certification as a Registered Nurse in good standing.
  • Delegating RN in the state of Maryland (will have three months to complete this requirement once starting at The League)
  • Trainer in First Aid/CPR (will have three months to complete this class once starting with The League)
  • A minimum of one year of direct experience with people with disabilities in a healthcare setting. 
  • Experience working in a camp setting preferred
  • A driving license with no more than 2 points on record is a plus.

Physical Abilities: Must be able to work long hours and respond quickly to emergencies. Must be able to ambulate quickly from one part of camp to another, sit for extended periods, and have finger dexterity, hand-eye coordination, effective verbal communication, fine motor skills, and gross motor skills. Able to live and stay overnight in a camp setting when programs are in session. 

Knowledge of:
  • Nurse practice act
  • Extensive experience in dispensing medications
  • Safety procedures and proper body mechanics
  • Documentation procedures to ensure proper care.
  • The needs of special populations
  • Basic word processing and e-mail 

Ability to:
Handle emergencies situation calmly and effectively; administer medications safely; maintain accurate records and prepare reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; supervise staff effectively; this includes a plan, coordinating, evaluate and direct the work of subordinate staff; read and interpret governmental laws, regulations and related materials; direct the work of others.

Salary Description
$30 - 35 hour
