Research Data Analyst, Epidemiology & Public Health

Stanford University’s Human Trafficking Data Lab is seeking a highly organized and experienced Research Data Analyst (Research Data Analyst 1) who would be excited to join a dynamic, mission-driven team in a fast-growing, interdisciplinary program. This position will reside in the Department of Epidemiology & Population Health in the School of Medicine while also maintaining an affiliation with the Center for Human Rights and International Justice and Department of Health Policy. The Human Trafficking Data Lab (the Lab) is a collegial, multidisciplinary research collaboration with both academic expertise and frontline anti-trafficking experience working to bring the most promising innovations in research methods and modern data science to the anti-trafficking field. The Lab is developing a research program bringing the latest technological approaches to detection and risk prediction, and showing that rigorous quantitative social science research on human trafficking is possible. We work hard to translate this research into frontline protocols and impactful anti-trafficking policy. We have chosen to begin our work with policy partners in Brazil, but we hope to scale to other countries over time. A sample of current research projects that this position would support in managing include building a decision support tool for anti-trafficking task forces, using satellite imagery and artificial intelligence tools to detect illegal labor camps, conducting quasi-experimental impact evaluations of public programs (such as conditional cash transfer) and other anti-trafficking interventions, understanding the impact of corporate sanctions and how companies try to evade them, and developing enhanced approaches to primary data collection for human trafficking prevalence estimation.

Duties include:
  • Collect, manage and combine data from various sources in various formats, including satellite imagery, shapefiles, and other geospatial data.
  • Employ new and existing tools to automate feature identification and feature detection, interpret, analyze, and visualize multivariate relationships in data.
  • Create visualizations, reports, and technical documentation appropriate to data and reporting requirements.
  • Use system reports and analyses to identify potentially problematic data, make corrections, and determine root cause for data problems from input errors or inadequate field edits, and suggest possible solutions.
  • Develop reports, charts, graphs and tables for use by investigators and for publication and presentation.
  • Collaborate with faculty and research staff on statistical methods and modeling.
  • Provide documentation based on audit and reporting criteria to investigators and research staff.
  • Communicate with government officials, grant agencies and industry representatives.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working with satellite and other geospatial data.
  • Experience building satellite data pipelines.
  • Experience generating prediction algorithms using satellite data.
  • Experience with Raster Vision, RoboSat, RoboSat.pink, Solaris, or similar.
  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated experience using and applying R and/or Python analytical software as well as basic knowledge of other geospatial software (QGIS or ArcGIS), database user interface and query software, and data mining software.
  • Ability to collect data in varying formats using a variety of methods, such as automating API requests, data mining, and other approaches to improve or expand databases.
  • Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple activities in a deadline-oriented environment; highly organized, flexible and rigorous attention to detail.
  • Ability to use logic to calculate results from data and to assess plausibility, validity, and bias potential; efficiently construct a database or scrutinize the form of a question.
  • Ability to work with data of varying levels of quality and validity.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce data/results in a clear and understandable manner meeting user requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple internal and external customers.
  • Graduate degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Economics or Health Economics.
  • Relevant experience in statistics, economics, health economics, and/or healthcare.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and relevant experience. Experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics or engineering.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Substantial experience with MS Office and analytical programs.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Sitting in place at computer for long periods of time with extensive keyboarding/dexterity.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Rarely writing by hand.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Some work may be performed in a laboratory or field setting.

The expected pay range for this position is $64,000 - $93,000 per annum.
