The Olympic and Siuslaw National Forests are seeking native plant materials and restoration interns for work developing native plant materials stock to respond to increasing fire risk across the forests and the region. The Olympic National Forest includes more than 600,000 acres of temperate rainforest west of Seattle, Washington, on the Olympic Peninsula. The forest surrounds Olympic National Park and the Olympic Mountains, and the headquarters are in Olympia. Interns will also conduct native plant materials and potentially some invasives control work on the Siuslaw National Forest. The Siuslaw is headquartered in Corvallis, OR and includes two ranger districts which manage much of coastal mountain forests of Oregon, from Tillamook to Coos Bay. These positions are for June 25 – Oct 15, 2023.
The positions will be stationed on the Olympic National Forest, with intermittent travel to the Siuslaw. Interns will work in a two-person team to hike along roads and trails, and off-trail, in the front and backcountry, identifying native plants and collecting seed. Some work on invasive control in previously burned areas may also be required. Interns will need to operate field trucks safely across rugged two-tracks and four-wheel-drive roads. Intern teams will sometimes work with a larger group to accomplish tasks. Tasks include native plant seeding, native seed and other plant materials collection, potentially some invasive plant surveys and control or removal projects, and electronic and paper data collection using ArcGIS online, Field Maps, and Survey 123. Interns will be trained in basic native and invasive plant identification, seed collection, invasive control techniques, and data collection methods.
