Position Details
Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.
The National Park Service Natural Resources and Science Program (NR&S) for Interior Regions 8, 9, 10, 12 (legacy Pacific West Region) supports more than 60 national parks in California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, portions of Arizona and Montana and the territories of Guam, American Samoa, as well as the Northern Mariana Islands.
Our Program advances the stewardship of natural resources in parks and beyond to leverage landscape-, seascape-, and airscape-scale conservation. We support parks in policy direction and guidance, and technical assistance -- engaging the best available science and managing amid continuous change. The Natural Resources & Science Program also coordinates with other disciplines at regional and national scales to meet crosscutting challenges to resource conservation and preservation.
The fellow will perform the duties below under the mentorship of NR&S staff.
Candidates must be able to pass a federal background check to obtain an official personal identity verification (PIV) credential. Work schedule negotiable after selection. Some travel opportunities will be available to work directly with NPS professionals stationed throughout the Region.
Position Responsibilities include:
·       Working with program leads in the NR&S group on key issues and projects that are relevant to parks and the regional office.
·       Working with the NR&S program leads to respond to requests from NPS leadership or Congress, sometimes on a short timetable.
·       Being flexible and working efficiently in a telework scenario (max telework or partial).
·       Communicating your interests to supervisors and NR&S program leads so that opportunities for mentorship and career advancement can be maximized.
·       Interfacing with partners to gather and exchange information and plan/execute projects.
·       Working effectively both on a team(s) and independently to plan and carry out projects.
Science Communications (40%)
·       Develop digital content for Natural Resources & Science internal and external communication on our SharePoint pages and NPS websites.
·       Compile annual highlights for the region showcasing how science is used in parks for conservation and stewardship.
·       Assist Regional Science Advisors, science entities and parks to advance science communication efforts across the Region.
·       Assist the Regional Natural Resource Advisory Committee in various tasks to aid in service to parks such as preparation of research findings and summaries for science communication highlights.
·       Help shape science communication efforts to be relevant to diverse external and internal lay audiences.
Program Support (40%)
·       Assist the Regional Hydrologist with developing a SharePoint page and data mine relevant materials for park projects.
·       Assist Regional Drought Planning Group with gathering and compiling information and data on current and historical knowledge of seasonal conditions and status of water supplies at parks in preparation for drought contingency planning.
·       Assist Regional Air Resources Program Manager with coordination of Regional Haze status reviews at Class I parks and compiling a variety of relevant air quality related data for use by parks in planning and day-to day operational decision making on an existing SharePoint site.
·       Gather Best Management Practices and fact sheets for the Integrated Pest Management SharePoint site. Research, mine and compile.
·       Climate Change: Facilitate strategic planning for protecting ecologically important vegetation communities in the region through 1) developing capacity for building and maintaining spatial data for fuels, invasive species, at-risk native species, and future drought scenarios, and 2) coordinating with park, region, and fire specialists to incorporate spatial data into prioritizing regional needs for prescribed fire, mechanical fuels treatment, and invasive species management.
·       Assist with other tasks as assigned.
Conservation Fellow Development (10%)
·       Participate in park field trips. Learn about Threatened and Endangered species recovery, habitat restoration and the latest issues facing NPS units of our time.
·       Work directly with NR&S professionals in the following fields: Wildlife Management, Plant Ecology, Ocean and Coastal Resources Management, Energy & Minerals Development (protecting park natural and cultural resources), Air Resources, Natural Sounds and Dark Night Skies, Water Resources, Landscape Ecology, Geology, Natural and Cultural Resource Strategic Planning.
·       Create Individual Development Plan with supervisor and implement aspects of the plan.
Minimum Requirements:
·       Minimum 18 years of age
·       High School Diploma
·       US Citizen or Permanent Resident
Preferred Qualifications:
·       Working towards study in biological and/or physical sciences
·       Eager to learn and make a difference
·       Independent, quick learner
·       Interest in science communication

·       We will work with incumbent to design a schedule of excellent trainings with $4,881 travel and professional development budget.
