Harvard Lee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness Summer Internship

The Lee Kum Sheung Center for Health and Happiness Summer Internship Program is a paid opportunity that offers training and support to a future generation of scholars interested in studying (1) the linkages between mental well-being and physical health outcomes, and (2) the translation of science related to these linkages to inform policy and practice. Examples of past projects include:

  • A meta-analysis on mindfulness interventions and subsequent physical activity level
  • Data cleaning, entry, and extraction for a resilience intervention study
  • A literature review on psychosocial factors to reduce physician burnout
  • Transcription of mock interviews to test a new software

Students will be placed with Center researchers and/or Science Affiliates working on projects related to the Center’s mission.

We are currently accepting applications for Summer 2023. Applications are due February 17, 2023.

Internship Dates: June – August 2023
Duration of Internship: 20-40 hours per week for 10 weeks
Note: The dates are somewhat flexible if applicants have summer vacation plans or other commitments. While most positions will be 20 hours/week, there may also be opportunities to work 30-40 hours/week. Once selected, interns can work with their internship host and the Center to determine their schedule.

Eligibility:
1. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program at an American college or university.
2. Applicants must be interested in doing research work related to the Center’s mission to build a rigorous and interdisciplinary science of positive health, happiness, and well-being with a focus on health equity, and to translate the science to influence practice and policy.
3. Prior research experience is helpful, but not required.
4. You must have a valid address in MA, NH, ME, VT, RI, CT, NY, or MD, to be eligible for a paid internship. The internship will be in-person, so interns need to live in/relocate to the greater Boston area for the summer.

Internship Placements:
Working with Center Affiliate Scientists, the Center has identified intern host sites that align with the Center’s mission. The Center will match successful applicants with the most appropriate internship sites, ensuring that the needs and interests of both the Affiliate Scientist and the intern are met through the placement. It is envisioned that interns will serve in a research assistant capacity, working with the Affiliate Scientist’s group on data collection and/or data analysis. Other possible activities could include literature reviews, grant writing support, and/or the development of repositories of information.

Logistics and Mentorship:
Interns will be paid $20/hr. The internship will take place in person, so you need to plan to relocate/live within driving distance of Boston for the duration of the internship program. Harvard will not subsidize costs related to relocation or accommodation. The Center will provide mentorship and guidance to interns via bi-weekly meetings over the summer. Ideally, this mentorship will provide interns with a sense of community, opportunities for connecting and networking, and professional development. We will also plan periodic social events for the interns to participate in.

Reporting Requirements:
Interns are required to submit a brief report (2 pages max) at the conclusion of their internship. Guidelines for the report will be distributed after interns are selected and placed.
