Life Science Research Professional 2, Transplant Research - Surgery

The Division of Transplant Research in the Department of Surgery is seeking a dynamic Life Science Research Professional 2 (LSRP 2) to join the laboratory of two Principal Investigators.
The LSRP 2 will perform more complex functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct a portion of the research project(s).
Responsibilities include but are not limited to designing research approaches including background research, experimental design and execution of the agreed research strategy with the PI. This includes complex surgical procedures in order to generate rodent models of transplantation (liver, small bowel, skin, kidney, heart, and VCA) and tumor models in rodents.

Duties include:
  • Perform complex lab experiments for a major portion of the research project. Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes. Write and update protocols for animal studies, Interpret and analyze results, often where few guidelines exist. Based on prior results, contribute to development of new research protocols and procedures or adaptation of existing protocols.
  • Make recommendations on plan design and/or research direction to principal investigator.
  • Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
  • Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; present findings for lab work group.
  • Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section. May contribute to publication of findings and present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
  • Supervise (either formally or informally) staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. Serve as technical resource for other research staff.
  • Perform general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock including animals, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed. May assist with purchasing laboratory equipment. Maintain surgical equipment, maintain compliance with regulatory procedures and be available for compliance inspections.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry or related field is preferred.
  • Must have the ability to design experiments, analyze data, interpret, and present results.
  • Must be quick to learn new techniques, able to modify and adapt standard protocols.
  • Candidate should be self-motivated, organized and a team player.
  • Candidate should also display good judgment, and planning skills.
  • In addition, should be detail-oriented, have good organizational skills, be able to work independently and keep accurate records.
  • Ability to work and think in an independent fashion with good problem-solving skills.
  • Candidate must be willing to work directly with animals and animal models.
  • Highly proficient animal and transplant procedures.
  • Previous experience with animal models including transplant models is essential.
  • Experience with rodent survival surgical techniques including anesthetic monitoring is essential.
  • Must have the ability to successfully perform anastomosis of vessels measuring 1 mm in diameter.
  • Proficiency in animal handling, transplant technical procedures, and animal research compliance.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and three years of related experience, or Master's degree.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
  • Position may require repetitive motion.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens.
  • Requires work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.
  • Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
  • Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator.
  • May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs.

The expected pay range for this position is $68,000 to $85,000 per annum.
