You will serve as a Paralegal Specialist in the Office of Counsel, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport, RI (NUWCDIVNPT).

You will provide a range of administrative and legal support to office attorneys across the spectrum of OGC practice, with an emphasis on support services for NUWCDIVNPT's Intellectual Property (IP) Law program.

You will analyze written communications from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to effectively support the patent attorneys during the prosecution of the patent application.

You will perform legal research involving a wide variety of substantive intellectual property legal matters and problems. You will assist in preparation of status reports to senior NUWCDIVNPT management by maintaining and executing queries on a comprehensive electronic database.

You will proofread pre-filing documents and note any deficiencies in case material (e.g. missing documents, errors).

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.


Qualifications

For NT-03:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the NT-02 pay band (GS-5/7 equivalent) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing legal support services for various fields (e.g. Intellectual Property, Patent, Trademark, or Contracts Law) by researching case law, analyzing facts, and reviewing legal documentation for accuracy to compile information for investigations or patent applications.

For NT-02:
Your resume must demonstrate 3 years of progressively responsible general experience, 1 year of which is equivalent to at least GS-4 level, that demonstrates the ability to:
  1. Analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data and recognize solutions.
  2. Plan and organize work.
  3. Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Education

Education can be substituted for specialized experience as follows:

For the NT-03:
Successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree
OR
Successful completion of two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree
OR

OR
A combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience

For the NT-02:
Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree
