Social Media Intern

Title: Social Media Intern 
Reporting to: Chief Communications Officer (CCO)
Location: Remote (must be comfortable and set-up to work in a remote environment)

Internship Summary  
The Social Media Intern is an integral part of the Communications Team and plays a hands-on role in the implementation of Family Equality’s social media strategy. This internship involves creating content for all social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and TikTok. Success in this position requires excellent organizational skills, the ability to problem solve independently, attention to detail, highly developed communication skills (written and verbal), superior interpersonal skills, and a commitment to social justice.

  • The internship is 10 hours per week starting in the spring 2023 semester (exact date to be determined by CCO and candidate) with an option of continuing beyond May 2023. 
  • Family Equality operates within a standard five-day work week model, typically Monday through Friday, 8 am – 5 pm ET (subject to change). One meeting per week will be scheduled during that time. Other internship work hours are negotiable and projects can be completed outside of those hours as determined by the CCO and candidate. 
  • Pay is $15 per hour with a maximum of 10 hours worked each week. Pay periods are bi-monthly (twice a month). 

Primary Responsibilities  
  • Create content for social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and TikTok)
  • Develop creative ways to engage and grow audiences and build relationships on all platforms
  • Create graphics and edit videos for social media platforms
  • Assist with performance reports of social media platforms
  • Maintain an agreed-upon work schedule and regular communication with Family Equality staff

Required Qualifications 
  • Experience with social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and TikTok
  • Self-motivation, focus, and the ability to work remotely
  • Flexibility, a positive attitude, and willingness to learn
  • Excellent organization skills coupled with the ability to maintain a vision for larger objectives 
  • Commitment to social justice
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills 
  • The ability to work well both independently and with others, as a team player
  • A solution-oriented mindset and ability to work effectively in high-pressure settings 

Preferred Qualifications 
  • Experience using Buffer (social media publishing tool)
  • Experience working within the LGBTQ+ movement and/or with families
  • Candidates who hold or are working towards a bachelor's degree (or higher) or with experience in the LGBTQ+ advocacy movement and/or social media
  • Candidates majoring (or holding degrees) in communications, marketing, design, or other related fields

COVID Vaccination Information
Family Equality is a remote organization where our entire staff works from their homes in numerous states across the country. While there is not a physical office space that any one staff member is required to visit at this time, Family Equality does hold events in various locations nationwide that include members of our staff and/or board. Accordingly, all new hires, interns, and volunteers will be required to be fully vaccinated from the time they start working or volunteering. Vaccination exceptions may be made for medical or religious exemptions.
