P230035 - Law Practice Technologist, Law Library - Instructional Support Specialist

Position Summary:
The Charles B. Sears Law Library at the University at Buffalo seeks a collaborative, dynamic, and service-oriented individual to serve as our Law Practice Technologist. The Law Practice Technologist will be responsible for integrating Law Library services and instructional programming related to law practice technology into the School of Law’s initiatives focused on preparing students for the modern practice of law.
As the Law Practice Technologist, your primary duties will include:
  • Planning, designing, and launching the Law Library’s Legal Technology Center.
  • Administering and overseeing the daily operations of the Legal Technology Center, which includes creating and enforcing policies, setting priorities for the Center, and promoting and managing the use of the Center by the School of Law, the University community, and external constituents.
  • Creating an overall strategic vision to successfully incorporate the Legal Technology Center into the educational mission of the School of Law.
  • Promoting and coordinating technology competency training for the School of Law so that graduates enter the job market meeting an attorney’s ethical obligation under New York Rules of Professional Conduct Rule 1.1 (Comment 8) to be aware of the “benefits and risks associated with technology the lawyer uses to provide services to clients.”
  • Researching, monitoring, and analyzing current trends in legal practice and evolving technologies to set priorities for the Legal Technology Center, and challenging students to evaluate and identify the best technology resources for lawyering tasks.
  • Communicating the Legal Technology Center’s financial needs and engaging in annual budget planning with the Associate Director and Director of the Law Library.
  • Supervising, training, and mentoring 1 FTE employee.
  • Developing and teaching a for-credit course on law practice technology in the School of Law.
  • Providing in-person, virtual, and asynchronous instruction to individual law students and ad hoc presentations in School of Law courses on the use of law practice technology.
  • Liaising with School of Law Clinics, Moot Court, and Mediation programs to enrich experiential learning opportunities by integrating relevant, cutting-edge technologies.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate or professional degree (J.D., M.L.S., Ph.D. or other graduate degree).
  • Previous employment in a legal setting (for example, court, law firm or legal services organization).
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing justice, diversity, inclusion, and equity in organizations.
  • A strong service orientation.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to think independently, consult appropriately, and solve problems.
  • Creativity and adaptability in the face of multiple simultaneous demands.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of current and emerging law practice technologies including e-Discovery software.
  • Experience in an academic law library and experience teaching legal technology courses.
