Natural Resource Steward

Length: Term of positions is 26 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk
Location: Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, CO
Living Allowance: $600/week
AmeriCorps Award: Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps education award upon successful completion of the program. Value of education award is $3,247.50 (pre-tax).

Title of Position: Natural Resource Stewards (2 positions)

 
Position Details:
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

SIP in partnership with the National Park Service are seeking TWO AmeriCorps members who will support Rocky Mountain National Park’s Resource Stewardship Division as Natural Resource Stewards (Stewards). Stewards will primarily be working with the Restoration Ecology Program helping cultivate and plant native plant species, manage invasive species, and document and map rare and non-native species.

Position Responsibilities will include:
  • Restoration of Alpine Tundra Communities
o Load and transport plant material and supplies to project site
o Plant greenhouse and nursery stock into restoration site using appropriate techniques
o Set up irrigation with gas powered pumps, hose, and water tanks
o Keep records of material planted and work completed

  • Restoration of Ground Disturbances Due To Construction Projects Including Vault Toilet, Entrance Stations, and Utility Lines
o  Weigh and mix seed for project
o  Treat invasive plants growing in project areas
o  Seed and mulch site
o  Install erosion control materials where necessary
o  Record and map areas restored using GPS technology

  • Removal of Exotic Plants in High Priority and High Visitor Use Areas
o  Use hand tools to manually remove invasive plants
o  Use backpack sprayers, Utility Terrain Vehicles, and truck mounted sprayers to control invasive plants with herbicides
o  Mix, store, and load herbicides
o  Record data on treatment areas using GPS
o  Map new populations of exotic invasive plants
 
Minimum Requirements:
  • No minimum education requirements
  • Ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Records Check (must be at least 21 year old or have had a license for 3 years)
  • Ability to work outdoors at elevations above 8,000 feet for 8-10 hour days.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in biological sciences, natural resources, or a related field
  • Experience in outdoor field work
