Supervising Paralegal - Criminal Appeals Bureau (CAB)

Job Description
The Criminal Appeals Bureau (CAB) of The Legal Aid Society is the largest post-conviction public defender in New York City, annually providing holistic, client-centered representation to over 1,000 people with misdemeanor, felony, and homicide convictions. We represent low-income people in all five boroughs who are challenging their criminal convictions on appeal or in other post-conviction proceedings, such as 440 motions, Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act resentencing applications, and Sex Offender Registration Act hearings and appeals.

The Criminal Appeals Bureau (CAB) of The Legal Aid Society has an opening for a Supervising Paralegal to assist with the administration of the Bureau and, in particular, the Managing Attorney’s Office (MAO). MAO consists of the Managing Attorney, two Assistant Managing Attorneys, a Supervising Paralegal, and about 15 other paralegals and support staff. MAO is responsible for communicating with courts, clients, and attorneys to ensure that records are complete and cases progress efficiently so that our clients’ rights are protected. MAO attorneys and paralegals are integral to CAB’s mission of mitigating the long-term devastating impact of mass incarceration on our communities.

The Supervising Paralegal will oversee the paralegals and support staff, checking in with them, troubleshooting issues, and providing feedback. The Supervising Paralegal will also be responsible for, among other things, opening new cases; ensuring that cases advance through the record collection, screening, and assignment process; coordinating pick-up and copying of court files; and supporting the monthly reporting to our funders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
