News Summer 2023 Intern

Your role in helping us shape the future:
U.S. News & World Report is seeking an early-career journalist who wants a range of experiences at a national digital news outlet. We’re looking for someone who can write daily stories on a range of domestic and international topics for our news team, as well as for our Best CountriesBest States and Healthiest Communities sections. You’ll have the chance to work with several editors, dabble in CMS production and learn how to make simple data visualizations. Reporters with demonstrated ability will have the opportunity to tackle longer stories as time allows.
Are you up to the challenge?
1. Writing and pitching daily and occasionally longer-term stories for the news team and special sections within it. Articles can be short report stories, Q&As, slideshows, breaking news, explainers, profiles or analytical pieces tied to recent news events.
2. Assist with launches, such as the Best Countries launch or the Best States launch, if they occur during your tenure.
3. Assist with article production through our content management system (CMS), if needed.
4. Work closely with our data team to strengthen stories and create data visualizations to enhance your work.
5. Assist with research or administrative tasks as needed.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:
Eligible candidates must be one of the following:
  • Part-time or full-time students who have completed 24+ credit hours (rising sophomores/juniors/seniors) and are enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited college or university
  • Part-time or full-time students enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited college or university
  • May 2023-2024 graduate
Ability to exercise sound judgment, professionalism and maturity in the workplace
Effective communicator in both written and spoken English
Good oral and written communication skills
Proficiency in use of MSOffice Suite and Google Docs
3.0 GPA or above preferred

  • A passion for the news industry and a demonstrated interest in becoming a journalist

  • An openness to constructive feedback
Summer Intern Program Description:
  • 10 weeks; ideally, starting on Monday, June 5, 2023 through Friday, August 11, 2023.
  • We expect interns to work 37.5 hours/week, Monday- Friday.
  • Internship pays $16.10 an hour.
