Childcare Provider, Compass Family Resource Center

About the team: Compass Family Resource Center offers trauma-informed services to families who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Families can access immediate crisis support and get connected with resource referrals, case management, groups and classes, and support with job searches.
Salary: $24-$28 per hour
Schedule: Monday - Friday during standard business hours
Work location: 37 Grove Street, San Francisco. Fully in-person.

What the Drop-In Childcare Provider will do:
The Drop-In Childcare Provider makes sure that Compass kids have a safe, fun, and engaging place to play while their parents are in meetings or classes on-site. They also work with the rest of the Family Resource Center team to ensure that families have a smooth experience when they come in for meetings or to pick up food, diapers or other donations.

This is a great position for a team player who loves spending time with kids and is eager to gain experience in a social services or nonprofit environment.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Make sure that kids are safe and well cared-for during their time in the drop-in childcare area.
  • For babies and younger kids, this might include feeding, diaper-changing or help with toileting, comforting and playing.
  • For older kids, this might include playing games, leading arts and crafts projects, or just making sure that kids have a quiet space to do their homework.
  • Communicate with parents and staff about the child’s experience in care.
  • Design and lead parent/child interactive groups, like a monthly story hour.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and engaging childcare space.
  • With the rest of the Family Resource Center team, receive and organize donation deliveries and ensure a smooth experience for families coming to pick up diapers, bags of food, clothing, or other items.

The Childcare Provider should have these skills and experiences:
  • Genuine love of playing with and taking care of kids, especially those ages 0-5.
  • Professional experience as a teacher, nanny, camp counselor, or similar is encouraged but not required.
  • If you speak Spanish, we especially encourage you to apply! If you don't speak Spanish, that's ok, but you must be willing to be flexible and creative when communicating with parents and kids whose primary language is not English.
  • Experience working with people in crisis and understanding of issues facing homeless and low-income families.
  • Ability to assess and deescalate potentially volatile situations with support.
  • Outstanding work habits: punctual, flexible, reliable, organized, team-oriented, strong communicator.
  • Proficiency with computer programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work.
  • TB and fingerprint clearance (Department of Justice, FBI, Child Abuse Index)
  • Able to lift a child of up to 30 lbs.

Location and Covid safety:
  • Work location: 37 Grove St, San Francisco.
  • Covid vaccination required for all staff
  • Covid precautions in the workplace: required masking, air filtration, sanitizing

Compensation and Benefits:
  • Salary range: $24 - $28 based on experience and education
  • Paid time off: 19 days of vacation your first year, 24 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, time off for education, family leave.
  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children.
  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5.
