Fisheries Management Intern

An internship at the Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery will provide a diverse, challenging, and well-rounded internship opportunity. Staff working with interns at this facility have a proven track record of success that will be continued in the future. The primary responsibilities of the intern will be as follows:
 
Statewide Resource Management – Hatchery
  • Learn how MDC TAKES CARE OF NATURE and why Missouri has sustainable fish and wildlife by implementing Strategy 1.2.1 – Manage, through sound science, harvestable fish and wildlife species at biologically and socially acceptable levels by working directly with hatchery staff to raise rainbow and brown trout to be stocked into Missouri lakes and streams. 
 
Primary Duties: Assist hatchery staff with all fish culture activities required to produce 625,000 catchable Rainbow Trout and 50,000 Brown Trout. These activities will include feeding, cleaning and flow measurements in fish production tanks and raceways, inventory samplings, loading, transferring, or stocking fish in Lake Taneycomo, and water quality monitoring of available oxygen in fish production raceways. Assist with fish health assessments that involves dissection and evaluation of fish health condition. Perform groundskeeping activities including mowing and weed eating, food plot management, and trail maintenance. Work with warm water hatchery staff as opportunities are available.
 
Education – Conservation Center
  • Learn how MDC CONNECTS PEOPLE WITH NATURE: Implement Strategy 2.2.2 - Deliver efficient and effective nature-based educational programs to diverse audiences by providing guided hatchery tours to the public, schools, and organized groups.
  • Learn how MDC MAINTAINS PUBLIC TRUST: Implement Strategy 3.1.1 - Anticipate the needs of customers and deliver high-quality products and services by providing information about fishing, hunting, hiking and other nature related topics on a daily basis.
Primary Duties: The student intern will be assisting staff, volunteers, and the area Conservation Educator with public programs and special events that will continue to occur while the Conservation Center is under construction. Develop and establish interactive skills with diverse audiences that attend in person and virtual programs. Develop and deliver programs to the public, schools, and organized groups. Care for, feed, and maintain live animals including fish, reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods.
