Job Purpose
The Associate Director’s primary job purpose is to direct, manage, and organize over 180 registered student organizations, and develop implement large-scale programs and campus-wide events sponsored by the Office of Student Life. Responsible for the oversight of student media organizations, and the campus programming board. Promotes best practices, student learning, and the achievement of departmental and divisional goals. Performs other duties as assigned. Acts on behalf of the Executive Director of Student Involvement in the event of his/her absence and is able to commit the department to a course of action or financial accountability, as needed.
This position also provides advisement, vision and strategic direction to the professional staff who manage CAB and student media groups. Provides educational and developmental learning opportunities for student organization representatives and advisors. Serves as consultant to and expert resource for student organization officers, the Student Government Association (SGA) Secretary and Treasurer, and other student organizations.
Minimum Requirements
Master’s degree with an emphasis in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Student Personnel or Leadership required. Experience advising student groups and event planning and management required. Knowledge of and ability to apply student development theory to practical situations is also essential. Knowledge of assessment practices in higher education. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to provide leadership training and workshops related to program planning, budgeting, marketing, committee recruitment and retention essential. Strong interpersonal, communication (written & oral) and organizational skills. Ability to create, interpret and apply policies and procedures. Familiar with agents, artists, organizations and resources related to campus programming (examples include NACA, ACUI and APCA). Ability to develop complex budgets and monitor expenditures. Knowledge of development, maintenance and application of co-curricular content management systems. Knowledge of the use of social media to market Student Life programs. Ability to create a welcoming, inclusive environment and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, faculty/staff and public.
Additional Comments Regarding Position
Evening and weekend hours required. Occasional out-of-state overnight travel. Expected to work collaboratively with other members of the Student Life staff to provide diverse and balance programs that can contribute to the holistic education of College of Charleston students.

1.) Student Organization Program Development & Management 
Directs, manages and assesses various student organization development programs and services for student officers, members, and faculty/staff advisors, including but not limited to monthly workshop series, online training modules, officer transitions, marketing and advertising. Provides oversight of the recognition process for all student organizations and clubs. Manages and evaluates planned programs and events that enhance leadership and involvement opportunities for students and advisors. Ensures all student organizations are in compliance with all federal, state, local, and university regulations, policies and procedures including domestic and international travel. Manages, promotes, and serves as campus expert for the online student engagement platform (Engage).

2.) Student Organizations Advisement
Directly advises the Student Government Association (SGA) Secretary and Treasurer. Reviews and revises policies and guidelines for the administration of student organizations, including the development and annual publication of “The Compass,” the student organizations handbook. Advises, coaches, and provides resources to a variety of student organizations and advisors placing an emphasis on student learning and student leadership. Directs budget management and compliance, contract negotiations, event management, and risk management for student organizations in cooperation with the Executive Director for Student Involvement and Business Manager of Student Life.

3.) Student Life Programming and Events
Plans, coordinates and implements large-scale programs, campus-wide special events, or new programmatic elements sponsored by the Office of Student Life including concerts, distinguished speakers, cultural celebrations, late-night programs, food insecurity initiatives, or sustainability initiatives. Develops and manages budgets associated with these programs. Provides opportunities for student organizations and campus departments to serve as co-sponsors and partners in the creation of a comprehensive annual programming calendar.

4.) Personnel Management
Oversees the advisement of the Cougar Activities Board (CAB), and Cistern Yard Media (CYM) by supervising the Assistant Director of Student Life for Programming and Student Media. Provides assistance and guidance in development of the CAB and CYM annual budgets requests, and facilitates the allocation of funds for programs & services. Provides leadership, resources and advocates for both CAB and CYM in cooperation with the Assistant Director. Assists in the development of learning outcomes-based training, and other educational opportunities for the Assistant Director’s professional development.

5.) Student Life Department Management
Contributes toward weekly meetings of Student Life staff and areas of responsibility (both Operations/Facilities and Programming). Acts on behalf of the Executive Director for Student Involvement in the event of his/her absence and is able to commit the department to a course of action or financial accountability, as needed. Actively participates in committees including but not limited to: Weeks of Welcome, Orientation After Dark, Family Fun Day, New Student Convocation, First Night Charleston, etc.
