The Foundation Engineers are responsible for providing geotechnical recommendations to designers for projects throughout the state to include bridges, buildings, retaining walls, traffic signals, and roadway lighting. They also provide technical assistance to field engineers during construction of driven piling, drilled shafts, spread footings, and retaining walls.
Work is normally in an office environment with eight-hour work days.
Travel is required for site inspections and construction support. Statewide overnight travel with drill crews will be required for the first several months to obtain a working knowledge of subsurface exploration methods and techniques.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Applicant should possess or be eligible to obtain an FE or PE license.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Only applicants with a bachelor's degree in civil or geological engineering or a related engineering field will be considered.
Knowledge of:
- geotechnical engineering principles (soil mechanics, groundwater, etc.);
- South Dakota geology;
- computers and computer systems.
Skill to:
- communicate effectively;
- manage multiple projects concurrently.
Ability to:
- effectively plan, prioritize, and organize work to meet schedules and deadlines;
- prepare, interpret, and use engineering plans, maps, specifications, and technical reports;
- provide work direction;
- work outdoors in all weather conditions.
