Seasonal Conservation Steward-Northern New York

Conservation Stewards assist with hands-on management of The Nature Conservancy’s 148,000-acre portfolio of nature preserves and conservation easements in New York State. Conservation Land Stewards work closely with TNC Stewardship Team members and may assist partner organizations as needed. 

The Nature Conservancy is hiring one temporary Conservation Steward for the following location: Pulaski, NY area. Anticipated start date of May 2, 2023, with an anticipated end date of September 30, 2023.

We’re Looking for You:

Preserve and Conservation Easement Stewardship: Assist Stewardship Team with on-the-ground aspects of nature preserve stewardship, conservation easement stewardship, and facilities management. Tasks include boundary marking and maintenance; trail construction and maintenance; parking lot maintenance; and routine mowing of trails, grounds and wildlife habitats. Conservation Land Stewards will interact with the public, volunteers, adjacent landowners and stakeholders. Tasks may include property monitoring, GIS data collection and conservation easement project documentation assistance.
 
Conservation Management: Assist Conservation Team with managing and monitoring of conservation targets. Specific management targets depend upon location but may include grassland management, forest management; and invasive species management. Tasks may include scientific field data collection; monitoring of wildlife habitat and/or forest health; and assisting with preparation of reports.
 
Conservation Land Stewards will spend most of their time working outside in the field. Stewards will be expected to work independently and to drive to field sites that may be several hours away from their base location. Training will be provided for all tasks. Conservation Land Stewards will have ample opportunities to learn new skills and gain experience in the fields of conservation and land management.

What You’ll Bring:

·      High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience             
·      Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
·      Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR).
·      Valid drivers’ license.
 
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
 
·      Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
·      1 - 2 years’ experience in land management or related field.                    
·      Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.  
·      Ability to obtain driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
·      Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
·      PC and/or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.
