This is what you will do:
At Alexion, we know that rare disease patients struggle to reach an accurate diagnosis, on average waiting over four years and visiting more than seven specialists to diagnose their diseases. At the Diagnostics Center of Excellence (DxCoE), we seek to improve the diagnostic journey for rare disease patients by developing strategies and capabilities that create better diagnostics tests and improve patient experiences. We help health care providers with better diagnostic tools and tests, so rare disease patients can receive the right course of life-changing medicines in a timely manner.
We are seeking a summer research intern to join our newly established DxCoE lab. Candidate will conduct proof-of-concept experiments to support assay and In vitro diagnostics (IVD) development. Candidate will learn high quality research techniques and realize the importance of their work: making a positive impact on rare disease patient outcomes.
You will be responsible for:
  • Follow the mentorship and guidance of senior scientist to perform lab experiments; these experiments include but are not limited to:
  • Reagent preparation
  • Assay development and optimization
  • Biological sample processing and testing
  • Develop biological assay and sample processing method to support current Dx CoE programs
  • Follow experimental protocols to execute experiments and work closely with experts from cross-functional teams
  • Data analysis and result presentation, as well as documentation in electronic lab notebook systems
You will need to have:
  • Successful candidates will be pursuing a BS or MS in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or relevant scientific field
  • 1+ year experience in a research lab with strong biological experiment skills
  • Comfortable in executing routine work independently
  • Highly organized and excellent in following protocols precisely
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent observation and strong documentation skills
  • Willingness to tackle problems and accept new challenges
  • Maintain excellent levels of housekeeping, safety, and environmental standards with the laboratory according to Alexion guidelines
We would prefer for you to have:
  • Demonstrated the capability to work independently
  • Experience in one or more bench skill sets is highly desired: ligand binding assay (ELISA), antibody conjugation, assay development, sample processing techniques.
  • Experience in IVD development
