Public Affairs Intern (Summer 2023)

The Offices of the New York State Inspector General (OIG) accepts a small number of highly talented college and graduate students to join its Summer Internship Program.

Public Affairs Internship
The public affairs internship offers college or graduate-level students a substantive communications and public affairs task-based experience aimed to give them a true look into the work of the office. Interns will not only have hands on experiences, but also get the opportunity to demonstrate their writing, analytical and advocacy skills. Intern responsibilities include conducting research, compiling and analyzing documents, drafting and editing memos, drafting public-facing materials and content (including social media posts), and assisting the Communications and Strategic Initiatives Team with other tasks – including administrative tasks – as needed.

Details of Program
The 2023 Summer Internship Program runs for eight weeks between June 5, 2023, and July 28, 2023. While the Summer Internship program is unpaid, in the past, interns have arranged for work-study funding and public interest stipends to offset expenses. Additionally, interns may seek course credit from their respective institutions, where permitted.

An OIG Summer Internship offers college and/or graduate students a unique opportunity to learn about New York State government through OIG’s investigations of corruption, fraud, criminal activity, conflicts of interest, and abuse in the state’s executive branch agencies and related entities. The program exposes students to various aspects of state government through a variety of informational programs throughout the summer, including a weekly Lecture Series and Roundtable Lunches.

We are seeking highly motivated and detail-oriented students who love a challenge, work well as part of a team, bring a fresh perspective and innovative solutions to the table, and are passionate about our core mission of enhancing integrity, transparency, and accountability in our state government

Applying to the Program
Applications may be submitted until Friday, March 31, 2023, and internship offers will be made on a rolling basis. Interested students may apply by emailing a resume, writing sample, transcript and cover letter indicating the area and office in which you seek to be placed to Internships@IG.NY.gov, with “Summer Internship” in the subject line.

Candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. OIG is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to workplace diversity.
