Health Science Intern

POSITION SUMMARY

We are currently hiring summer 2023 interns for our Colorado office.
 
We are specifically seeking highly motivated interns with coursework and/or experience in toxicology, epidemiology, risk assessment, exposure science, and environmental/occupational health, among other topic areas. Candidates should desire to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and enjoy learning about new scientific focus areas as client demands dictate. Depending on experience and personal ambition, interns will be expected to assist staff and senior scientists in the firm in solving complex toxicological, epidemiological, exposure science, and public health problems. For outstanding candidates, opportunities also exist for intern interaction with clients and contribution to peer-reviewed publications. Individuals in this position will be mentored by senior consultants and will have opportunities to collaborate on a wide range of projects. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain an understanding of science consulting, contribute to a quickly growing consulting firm, and network with other consultants for subsequent professional advancement.
 
Successful candidates will demonstrate a desire to learn about and research a wide range of toxicology topics and related scientific disciplines, and combine this information, along with their knowledge, skills, and experiences, to identify solutions to exposure science challenges. Many assignments encompass highly visible regulatory initiatives or mass torts involving exposure to chemicals in the workplace, community, and via consumer products.
 
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
  • Critically evaluate published scientific papers and study reports in the environmental sciences, industrial hygiene, toxicology, epidemiology, biostatistics, and occupational medicine.
  • Perform quantitative exposure and risk assessments for clients for a variety of chemicals and exposure scenarios.
  • Work with senior scientists who serve as testifying experts in toxic tort litigation.
  • Review and summarize legal documents, including deposition and trial testimony.
  • Assist with the production of technical work products, presentations, and proposals.
  • Interact with clients on projects, both in-person and electronically.
  • Conduct research that may be presented at scientific conferences or submitted to scientific journals.
 
PREREQUISITES
 
  • Enrolled in or recent graduate of an MPH, MSPH, MS, DrPH, PhD, or related program in toxicology, epidemiology, environmental health, industrial hygiene, biostatistics, or a related field.
  • Prior undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, public health/safety, chemical, biomedical, or environmental engineering, statistics, pre-med, or a related scientific discipline is preferred. Rising third- or fourth-year bachelor’s level students from these focus areas will also be considered.
  • Must be self-motivated, highly detail-oriented, adaptable, effective with time management, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and a desire to work in a position with a heavy emphasis on both technical and lay writing.
  • An insatiable appetite for learning about the intersection between the environmental sciences, toxicology, public health, medicine, business, and the law.
  • Aptitude for multi-tasking among various projects with competing and dynamic deadlines.
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
  • Current and future U.S. work authorization is required.

  • Full-time interns are compensated $3,800-4,500 per month depending on experience.
