Academic Coordinator for Tutoring and College Success

The Academic Coordinator for Tutoring & College Success, within Vandal Success, provides support and education to elevate students’ learning experience at the University of Idaho. The Academic Coordinator fosters student success by building positive and professional student relationships and implementing proactive strategies that help students fulfill their educational goals.

The Academic Coordinator for Tutoring & College Success will have expertise in one or more areas related to student success, including: individual or group tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic coaching, and/or teaching college success strategies courses. The position reports to the Director for Academic Support Programs (ASP).

In collaboration with the Director for ASP and other academic coordinators within the ASP unit, this position will provide leadership and oversight of drop-in tutoring and tutoring appointments at the University of Idaho. Supporting the University’s mission and goals, the purpose of UI’s centralized tutoring program is to improve students’ academic performance by providing well-trained tutors to help students better understand course content in a wide variety of disciplines and help students perform better in their coursework. The Academic Coordinator manages online tutoring as well as the drop-in tutoring program located in the UI Library. The position also facilitates the UI Student Support Services-TRIO and Student-Athlete Support Services one-on-one tutoring services and works closely with campus partners to facilitate tutoring support across campus.

The Academic Coordinator provides maintenance and growth of drop-in and tutoring appointments, with duties including, but not limited to: tutor scheduling, payroll, certification record-keeping, service use analysis, budget data maintenance, and program marketing/promotion. Under the guidance of the Director for ASP, the Academic Coordinator recruits, trains, and supervises academic tutors, a graduate student-level assistant, an intern and other student staff associated with tutoring and college success efforts (as needed). The position also cooperates with the Senior Academic Coordinator to evaluate these staff.

This position is expected to work collaboratively with internal and external partners to ensure access to all campus support and enrichment opportunities needed to increase student success and retention.

Required Experience:
  • Two years’ experience in academic support at the post-secondary level.
  • Experience using organizational and planning skills providing attention to detail.
  • Experience using current business software used for word processing, data spreadsheet, calendar and email management.

Required Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree

Additional Requirements:
  • Ability to: travel, work weekends, and after regular business hours.

Education:
  • Master’s degree

Experience:
  • Working collaboratively, as well as independently.
  • Working with college-level tutoring or similar type of college-level academic support models.
  • Teaching at the college level, preferably with historically under-served college students.
  • Strong supervisory and personnel management experience. Including experience with hiring procedures and record keeping.
  • Experience developing training materials and manuals.
  • Experience developing procedures and budget management.
  • Identifying, assessing, developing, promoting, and presenting programs.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of work related information and materials.
  • Developing and maintaining complex data tracking systems using spreadsheet software.

Skills:
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.

Knowledge of:
  • Best practices in college-level academic support and academic tutoring.
  • College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) International Tutor Training Program Certification (ITTPC) requirements and processes.
  • Academic success strategies (study skills, time management, organization, test taking, note taking, etc.).
  • Developmental education and First Year Experience literature.
