Intern, Marketing and Tourism

The Communications team (Public Relations, Marketing, and Database Marketing) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA), promotes the MFA’s collection, exhibitions and programs through outreach to local, national and international press, print and digital advertising, management of social media channels with over 1.3 million followers, and email marketing.
 
The team is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented intern with strong writing skills and an interest in pursuing a career in marketing and communications. Reporting to the Marketing and Tourism Manager and Marketing Associate, the intern will become integrated into the daily operations of the Marketing and Communications teams, gaining valuable practical skills and workplace experience.
 
Through mentorship from a team of experienced professionals and experience in a fast-paced environment, the student will gain valuable practical skills for a future career in communications. They will also have opportunities to grow their professional networks through interactions with colleagues and interns from departments across the Museum.
 
Ideal candidates must be able to commit to work onsite 17 hours weekly (within 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday parameters), from June 13 through August 25, including two hours on Thursdays to participate in the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course. (There may be limited opportunities for remote work.)
 
Interns will be paid $16.00 per hour.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Brainstorm and create content for organic social, paid and sponsored media opportunities, tourism initiatives, and marketing tactics  
  • Assist in pre-planning of exhibition marketing by researching data, background and images to help build marketing plans/briefs
  • Research travel, marketing, and tourism trends under the supervision of the Marketing and Tourism Manager
  • Learn project management tools to track simultaneous marketing campaigns and performance
  • Assist with on-site events such as press previews and photo/video shoots
  • Assist with off-site tourism and networking conventions and conferences
  • Pull advertising samples for proofing and archiving
  • Assist in preparing wrap-up reports for internal and external stakeholders
 
Qualifications
  • Enrolled in and returning to an undergraduate degree program immediately following the internship period. (Preference will be given to rising juniors and seniors.)
  • Excellent writing, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok and interest in staying on top of trending topics and platform updates
  • Proven ability to work efficiently as part of a team and independently
  • Keen attention to detail and ability to multitask
  • Confidence to take initiative and pitch new ideas and content
  • Strong interest in art and the museum industry
