Intern, Access Technology Research and Evaluation

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Access Department is responsible for ensuring that people of all abilities feel welcome and are able to make direct connections with the Museum’s collection and exhibitions. The Department offers internships to college students who enjoy working with people with disabilities and are interested in learning more about the intersection of art and disability.
 
The Access Technology Research and Evaluation intern will serve a crucial role within the Access department, assisting in shaping future programming for a wide range of visitors. This intern will, with support from department staff, will provide research and evaluation on the effectiveness of our current assistive listening devices. An assistive listening device is part of a system used to improve hearing ability for people in a variety of situations where it is difficult to distinguish speech such as on museum tours. This position will research other technology options and speak to consumers of the technology to learn about barriers and opportunities with this technology. Additionally, the intern will support the ongoing accessible programming within the Museum. This opportunity will allow you to make connections within the MFA, other museums, and the disability community in the greater Boston area.

Ideal candidates must be able to commit to work onsite 15-20 hours per week, (schedule is subject to change within Monday-Friday parameters), including two hours on Thursdays participating in the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course (Periodic opportunities for remote work available through online classes.)
 
Intern will be paid $16.00 per hour.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Conduct product research
  • Develop survey 
  • Disseminate survey to individuals and organizations relevant to the survey
  • Collect and evaluate data
  • Produce short presentation on findings
 
Qualifications
  • Enrolled in and returning to an undergraduate degree program immediately following the internship period
  • Proven ability to interact easily and successfully with the disability community
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and take initiative
  • Ability to set realistic project deadlines and work independently to meet them
  • Ability to work onsite 15-20 hours per week, (schedule is subject to change within Monday-Friday parameters), including two hours on Thursdays participating in the Museum Pathways & Practices professional development course (Periodic opportunities for remote work available through online classes.)
  • Interns may request unpaid time off per manager’s approval in advance.
  • Ability to attend orientation on Tues, June 13, 10am-3:30pm
